CREATE A FIRMER, SLIMMER, AND MORE TONED ABDOMINAL SILHOUETTE FOR PATIENTS IN FLORHAM PARK, SOMERVILLE, AND ALL OF NEW JERSEY

Although many of us strive for a flat, toned stomach, exercise and diet may sometimes not be enough to help us attain our desired contours. A tummy tuck at New Jersey’s The Peer Group—serving Florham Park, Somerville, Livingston, Morristown, and beyond—is a form of body contouring plastic surgery that enhances the appearance of the midsection by addressing concerns such as sagging skin, diet-resistant fat, and stretched or separated muscles in the belly area.

WHAT IS A TUMMY TUCK?

Significant weight loss, aging, and pregnancy can result in unwanted changes to the abdomen. Some people also may have the natural tendency to carry more of their weight around the midsection due to genetics—and find it difficult to reduce belly fat as a result.

For those who want a slimmer, flatter midsection, diet-resistant fat may not be the only issue. They may also need to address muscle laxity and excess skin that give the belly a protruding or sagging appearance. For these patients, abdominoplasty surgery may be the answer.

A tummy tuck at New Jersey’s Peer Group can provide many benefits, including abdominal wall repair, excess fat removal, and tightening the skin over the stomach area—all achieved via carefully positioned incisions. The surgery also includes positioning a “new” navel.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A TUMMY TUCK?

What makes you a good candidate for a tummy tuck? Here’s what patients should know about what will make them a perfect candidate for abdominoplasty and what would disqualify them from getting this plastic surgery. In most cases, men and women will be considered good candidates for a tummy tuck if they are physically healthy, are at a stable weight, maintain realistic expectations about the benefits and potential results from this surgery, are non-smokers, and are unhappy about the way their abdominal area looks.

There are some common characteristics that most individuals who decide to undergo this procedure share. Women who have had multiple pregnancies and want to enhance the abdominal area or individuals who have previously been obese and want to address stretched skin or resistant fat deposits that still cling to the stomach area may be excellent candidates.

Patients will also need to fall within the ideal weight range for their height and body type to be eligible. It’s important to remember that this surgery should only be done for yourself rather than to fulfill someone else’s desires.

Who is not a good candidate for a tummy tuck? If you plan to become pregnant in the future or to lose a substantial amount of weight, this procedure may not be a good choice for you. This is because a growing baby can stretch out skin and tissues, creating new cosmetic issues, while losing weight can further alter contours and cause the skin to hang looser.

We can help you decide whether a tummy tuck will be the best option for you based on your aesthetic goals and your life situation.

WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS FOR TUMMY TUCK SURGERY?

At The Peer Group, we provide two types of tummy tucks for Somerville, Florham Park, and beyond: a full tummy tuck and a mini tummy tuck. If you’re asking, “What are the different types of tummy tucks?” then here’s what you should know about what each variation involves.

FULL TUMMY TUCK

A full abdominoplasty typically includes everything the procedure can offer: removing stubborn fat, removing stretched-out skin and re-draping the rest, repairing the abdominal wall muscles, and “repositioning” the navel. Not every step may be necessary for every patient, but the full technique involves the abdomen as a whole.

MINI TUMMY TUCK

Some patients have a modest amount of skin laxity below their navel. A mini tummy tuck only addresses the area of fat, muscle, and skin below the navel. There are no navel-related incisions. Patients who want to correct pregnancy-related changes may be ideal candidates.

HOW CAN I CHOOSE WHICH TUMMY TUCK APPROACH IS BEST FOR ME?

If you know that you have a belly that you would like to be flatter, that is enough. You don’t need to determine on your own whether a full or mini tummy tuck—or even a different procedure—would work better for you. After a physical examination and discussion of your aesthetic goals during a consultation with one of our plastic surgeons, we will present a treatment plan intended to give you the look you are asking for.

We want all of our abdominoplasty patients to be well informed and confident in their choice, so we encourage questions about the surgery itself, the results, the aftercare, and more. We also maintain a before-and-after photo gallery that includes images of patients who underwent an abdominoplasty so that you can see the results that are possible.

HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A TUMMY TUCK?

What do you need to do before a tummy tuck? What are the dos and don’ts before tummy tuck surgery? How do I prepare my body for a tummy tuck?

These are some of the most frequently asked questions patients have. If you’re considering this procedure, you will need to find out how to prepare for a tummy tuck.

To prepare for a tummy tuck, the first step will be to have a consultation with us so that we can explain more about the benefits of tummy tuck surgery, such as how it helps you to achieve a smaller waist. Tell us about your medical history, your current state of health, and any previous procedures you have had. Prior to having a tummy tuck, patients will be asked to get lab testing or a medical evaluation so that their overall state of health can be assessed and we can decide on the most suitable treatment options.

We will advise you on the best ways to prepare for a tummy tuck. You will need to avoid taking blood thinners, anti-inflammatory drugs, and certain types of herbal supplements before and after tummy tuck surgery because they thin the blood and increase bleeding. Patients should also stop smoking before and after this surgery because it inhibits blood flow, delays the healing process, and increases the risk of tissue damage along with other complications. In fact, you will need to avoid all forms of nicotine.

WHAT DOES A TUMMY TUCK PROCEDURE INVOLVE?

A tummy tuck is a form of plastic surgery that may combine several types of body surgery, depending on the specific needs of the patient. Abdominoplasty techniques are more advanced than ever before in 2023. Liposuction can be used to reduce fat from the front of the abdomen along with the waist and flanks. Lax skin can be trimmed away, and the remaining skin draped so that it lies flat. Muscles can be sewn back together to create a stronger, more stabilized abdominal wall. For certain tummy tuck patients, the belly button can be repositioned. No matter the extent of your surgery, our plastic surgeons work diligently to help patients from Livingston, Morristown, and beyond achieve their cosmetic goals.

Patients who come to our private on-site AAAASF-certified operating room will work with a board-certified anesthesiologist who administers the anesthesia necessary for making the procedure as safe and comfortable as possible.

A full tummy tuck then involves the surgeon making an incision in the navel to free the skin. Another incision is made along the pubic line to allow access to the abdominal area so fat can be removed, as well as make it possible for the skin to be pulled tight so that the excess can be trimmed away. The abdominal wall can also be repaired through this incision, and your own belly button can be re-positioned to sit in the appropriate location on the belly.

Once the contouring work is done, the abdominal wall and the incision will be injected with long-acting local anesthetic that will provide three to four days of decreased pain and discomfort. The incision will then be closed. The positioning of this incision is deliberate, so that any resulting scar from the tummy tuck can be hidden by clothing—even underwear, a bikini bottom, or trunks.

WHAT IS TUMMY TUCK RECOVERY LIKE?

How long does it take to recover from a tummy tuck? Somerville, Florham Park, and other patients will find that the timeline for recovery depends on the extent of the surgery. A more involved surgery requires more care and recovery. However, recovery is usually well-tolerated.

Every tummy tuck surgery will result in some common side effects, including swelling, bruising, and tenderness or discomfort. These sensations will likely last for one to two weeks. It will be important to get plenty of rest before you resume your daily activities, social engagements, and work.

Some light walking is encouraged after the initial days of healing, but abdominoplasty patients should avoid lifting anything heavy or participating in any sports, exercise, or similar activities that require exertion for at least twelve weeks. It’s important to follow your surgeon’s guidelines for caring for the bandage. We will advise you on what the most comfortable positions will be for sitting down or lying down.

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT FROM A TUMMY TUCK?

What results can you achieve from tummy tuck surgery? A tummy tuck gives you a flatter, more toned, firmer, and slimmer abdomen. Patients who have their abdominal muscles tightened can also potentially see improved definition. You may feel better and more confident in clothes.

How do you keep results after a tummy tuck? While the tummy tuck results are intended to last, it is possible to “undo” the effects by gaining new weight or going through a pregnancy after the surgery. Anything that pushes apart the muscles in the abdominal wall, causes existing fat cells to grow larger, or stretches the skin anew can cause the belly area to develop a lax or flabby look once again. Maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine will be the best way to preserve lasting results for this form of plastic surgery. This pays off in many ways—not just in terms of abdominoplasty results!

What Is the Cost of Tummy Tuck Surgery?

Since an abdominoplasty is such a highly customizable procedure, the cost is variable and depends on the specific surgery details. A mini tummy tuck, for example, will be priced differently from the full option. Your costs will be discussed at your consultation, and our financing page explains more about our policies and payment options.

WHAT OTHER COSMETIC PROCEDURES ARE AVAILABLE TO ENHANCE YOUR BODY CONTOURS?

Tummy tucks can be done as standalone procedures, but if you want to correct other physical changes associated with pregnancy at the same time, you might want to consider a Mommy Makeover. This involves a combination of surgeries customized for each patient’s specific needs—and may include abdominoplasty. Other common elements of this makeover are breast surgeries (such as breast augmentation, breast lift, or breast reduction), other body surgeries (such as liposuction, body lift, and labiaplasty), and even non-surgical treatments.

Abdominoplasty can also be part of overall post-weight loss body surgery, which may also include an arm lift, a thigh lift, and more. These procedures are designed to sculpt a more proportional, balanced, and youthful body shape that looks natural. Our team will help you put together a personalized plan to enhance one specific area, multiple areas, or your overall body.
