Before and After Photos

About Arm Lifts

An arm lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to eliminate excess skin to achieve smoother, more flattering arms. Many factors can lead to the accumulation of excess skin around the arms. In particular, this treatment is often performed to address changes caused by significant weight loss and aging. (1)

Arm Lift Benefits

An arm lift can provide a multitude of benefits, including:

  • Enhanced Contours: An arm lift can provide a sleeker and more defined arm silhouette, enhancing one’s overall proportions.
  • Improved Skin Tightening: Removing excess skin can restore a firmer feel and a more youthful-looking appearance.
  • Boosted Confidence: Undergoing an arm lift can empower patients to feel more confident, especially when wearing sleeveless tops.
  • Long-Lasting Results: The results of an arm lift can last for several years when paired with healthy lifestyle habits.
  • Reduction in Rubbing and Irritation: Arm lifts can alleviate daily discomfort caused by chafing and rubbing arm skin.
  • Customized Treatment Options: Each procedure is personalized for the patient’s unique anatomy and desired results.

Ideal Candidates

Ideal candidates for an arm lift typically consist of those who wish to eliminate loose or hanging skin from around their arms. If you are seeking an arm lift after losing significant amounts of weight, you will first need to reach a stable, maintainable goal weight. Patients should ideally be nonsmokers or at least willing to quit nicotine before their procedure and throughout their recovery.

All candidates interested in arm lifts should be in good overall health and hold realistic expectations about their results. Our team will determine each individual’s candidacy during their personal consultation.

Personal Consultation

The Peer Group asks that each patient attend a personal consultation before scheduling their arm lift. This meeting is an opportunity for our surgeons to get to know their patients more personally, and for each individual to learn more about arm lifts. Your surgeon will first explain what an arm lift entails and learn more about your medical history, concerns, and treatment goals. They will also evaluate the condition of the arms, carefully noting fat distribution and skin laxity. This information will be used to develop a personalized treatment plan.

Preparation

Each patient will receive a set of tailored preparation instructions during their personal consultation. Preparation is essential for facilitating a smooth procedure and recovery, so we ask that you carefully follow all information you receive. Patients will need to discontinue using certain medications and supplements containing blood-thinning properties. They also need to cease alcohol consumption and fully cease nicotine use at least four weeks in advance. (2)

Patients will need to arrange for transportation going to and from their appointment, as well as time away from work or social commitments to focus on healing. Your surgeon may also request lab testing to evaluate your readiness for their arm lift.

Procedure

When you arrive for your procedure, at our AAAASF-accredited surgery center. Your surgeon will use a marker to create guiding lines, outlining the treatment areas and your desired corrections. Once you are relaxed and comfortable, your surgeon will begin the arm lift.

The surgeon may begin the procedure with liposuction if there are excess deposits of fat found around the arms. This process starts with an incision in the arms, followed by an injection of tumescent fluid to make fat cells easier to remove. Your surgeon will then insert a specialized cannula through the same incision to gently remove the fat.

To address sagging skin, your surgeon will place an incision along the insides of your arms. (1) Through these incisions, they will remove the excess tissue, restoring a slimmer appearance to the arms. After making the necessary corrections, your surgeon will carefully close the incisions.

Recovery

Arm lifts are performed on an outpatient basis. This means that each patient will be released home to continue resting on the same day as their procedure. Each patient will receive a set of post-operative instructions to help guide them as they heal.

It is common for patients to experience swelling, bruising, soreness, and discomfort in the treatment area. These effects will dissipate on their own, but they may also be managed with the use of pain medications. Many patients can return to their jobs within one to two weeks, but they will need to continue avoiding high-impact and physical activities for several more weeks. Throughout this time, we ask patients to return to our office for prescheduled follow-up appointments to ensure their well-being and monitor their recovery.

Results

The results of your arm lift will become more noticeable as you continue to heal. The arms will appear slimmer, smoother, and more sculpted after removing hanging skin. The upper body will appear more harmonious and proportionate, and individuals can also enjoy improvements in their daily comfort after rubbing and chafing are eliminated. Shorter-sleeved tops and other styles of clothing may also fit more comfortably and look more flattering. Each of these effects can enhance each patient’s self-esteem and body confidence. The results of an arm lift are long-lasting, but patients will need to maintain healthy lifestyle habits, as significant fluctuations in weight can alter the effects of their procedure.

Corresponding Procedures

Our surgeons can combine multiple procedures to help complement and refine the results of each arm lift. Many patients choose to combine their procedure with other body-contouring procedures after weight loss, such as a tummy tuck or body lift. Patients who are undergoing cosmetic procedures to rejuvenate their bodies after pregnancy may want to incorporate their arm lift into a larger mommy makeover. Our team would be more than happy to make personalized recommendations to help each individual enhance their goals.
