Rhinoplasty
Consultations offered at our two convenient locations in Florham Park, NJ and Somerville, NJ

A rhinoplasty, or a “nose job,” is a procedure that reshapes your nasal structures to improve their function and appearance.
The nose is a central feature of the face, and it can greatly influence our overall appearance. While it is natural to have wide, protuberant, or asymmetrical features, they can detract from our surrounding features or draw unwanted attention. With a rhinoplasty, you can resculpt your nose and achieve seamless results that elevate your natural facial aesthetics.
The Peer Group is one of New Jersey’s leading aesthetic practices. Each of our surgeons is board-certified and possesses the knowledge and experience necessary to address complex concerns and structures in this area. Regardless of which surgeon on our team you work with, you can trust in the level of care you receive.

About Rhinoplasty
A rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that can adjust the bony and cartilaginous nasal structures to address functional concerns, aesthetic concerns, or a combination of the two. (1) This procedure can address a wide array of concerns, with many common corrections including reducing a prominent dorsal hump, reshaping or straightening the nasal bridge, correcting a deviated septum, or making the nose appear smaller overall. At The Peer Group, our surgical team can use one of two approaches when performing your procedure: the open rhinoplasty or the closed rhinoplasty.
- Open Rhinoplasty: Open rhinoplasty places a small incision across the columella (the skin between your nostrils). This incision placement offers greater visibility, and your surgeon may elect to use it if they are making more complex structural corrections.
- Closed Rhinoplasty: A closed rhinoplasty places an incision within your internal nasal canals. Your surgeon may use this approach if your concerns are minimal, as it avoids the appearance of external scarring. (2)
Benefits
As one of the most common procedures worldwide, rhinoplasty carries several notable benefits, including:
- Wide Application: Rhinoplasty can address both functional and cosmetic concerns, creating comprehensive improvements with one procedure.
- Improved Breathing: Your surgeon can perform this procedure to address any structural concerns, deformities, or nasal blockages that may be obstructing your airflow.
- Elevated Aesthetics: Rhinoplasty procedures can refine the shape, size, and symmetry of your nose to create a more balanced and pleasing facial sculpt.
- Tailored Solutions: Our surgical team designs each treatment plan around your specific concerns and anatomy.
- Lasting Results: The results of rhinoplasty are permanent, making it a worthwhile investment for many patients.
- Minimal Scarring: Our surgeons take great care when placing each incision to ensure any post-operative scarring remains discreet and barely perceptible.
Candidates
You may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty if you want to address functional issues and/or cosmetic concerns. Functional concerns typically include a blocked airflow, nasal obstructions, or structural irregularities, while cosmetic concerns often include asymmetrical and disproportionate nasal features.
To qualify for rhinoplasty, you should be in good overall health and maintain realistic expectations regarding your results. You should also be nonsmoking or willing to quit using nicotine. Our surgical team will assess your candidacy during your consultation.
Personal Consultation
During this initial appointment, one of our surgeons will meet with you one-on-one to discuss the rhinoplasty procedure, talk more about your medical history, and ask you about your personal concerns and goals. They will also assess your existing nasal anatomy and condition. Your surgeon will then use this information to create a unique treatment plan exclusive to you and your goals.
To schedule this consultation, you may either submit our online contact form or call your preferred office directly:

Preparation
Once you have scheduled your rhinoplasty, you will need to begin making certain preparations. Your surgeon will give you a set of detailed preoperative instructions to help you, which may include:
- Ceasing Certain Medications: Under the proper medical guidance, cease the use of any medications or supplements that could thin your blood.
- Arranging Transportation: Have a trusted friend or family member drive you home after your procedure.
- Preparing Time Away: Make arrangements for time away from your professional and social commitments to give your body time to heal.
- Filling Your Prescriptions: Acquire any medications you will need as you recover.
- Ceasing Any Substance Use: Stop consuming alcohol or nicotine in the weeks before your rhinoplasty, and prepare to maintain your abstinence in the weeks afterwards.
Procedure
Our surgeons perform each rhinoplasty procedure on an outpatient basis at our surgical center. The duration of your procedure will vary depending on your concerns, but you can expect it to last for a few hours. To ensure you remain comfortable, you will receive general anesthesia.
Your surgeon will then perform a closed rhinoplasty by placing an incision within the internal cavities of your nose, or an open rhinoplasty by placing an incision across the columella. After making the necessary incision and gaining access, your surgeon will reshape, remove, or reposition your cartilaginous and bony structures to create your desired nose. If necessary, they may create a cartilage graft by taking tissue from your septum or ear for structural support or by placing a customized nasal implant. They may also place internal sutures to hold a specific placement or shape.
Recovery
After your rhinoplasty, you can expect some swelling, bruising, and general discomfort. Many patients also experience these effects around their eyes, giving them the appearance of “black eyes.” These effects will dissipate on their own as you continue to recover, but you may reduce them with a cold compress, prescribed medications, and plenty of rest. Your surgeon will also place a nasal splint to support your nose as it heals.
After approximately one week, your surgeon will have you return to take out your splint. You will also be able to return to work and other light activities around this time. However, you must avoid intense exercise or heavy lifting for at least a month, and contact sports for approximately three months.
Even after your recovery effects resolve and your nose appears healed externally, it can take up to a year to completely recover. After these 12 months, your internal nasal structures should have fully repaired and stabilized themselves, and your new appearance will be set.
Results
The exact results of your rhinoplasty will vary, but you can expect to enjoy improvements such as a straighter nose bridge, narrower alar base, less prominent dorsal hump, and more. You can also enjoy other effects, such as enhanced proportionality and elevated symmetry. Many patients report feeling more confident after a successful rhinoplasty as well.

FAQ
What is a rhinoplasty?
A rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that can enhance the size, shape, symmetry, and overall appearance of the nose, as well as address certain functional concerns. Many people also refer to it as a “nose job.”
What is the difference between a septoplasty and a rhinoplasty?
A septoplasty addresses functional irregularities, structural concerns, and nasal blockages, specifically those regarding the septum, without altering the external appearance of your nose. A rhinoplasty elevates your nasal aesthetics while correcting both functional and cosmetic issues.
How long does it typically take to recover from a rhinoplasty?
Many of our patients return to most of their routine activities after approximately one to two weeks. However, it can take several months before you may return to heavy exercise, lifting, or contact sports. Patient experiences may vary.
Are the results of rhinoplasty permanent?
Yes, the results of a rhinoplasty are permanent. This means you can enjoy your renewed appearance without needing to return for follow-up or maintenance appointments in the future.
Will my rhinoplasty leave any scarring?
Each surgical procedure leaves some degree of scarring. If you receive a closed rhinoplasty, there will be no external scarring on the nose. If you undergo an open rhinoplasty, there will be limited scarring between your nostrils, which will gradually fade until it is barely noticeable.
How long until I see the final rhinoplasty results?
It can take as long as a year for the swelling to completely dissipate, though results are essentially visible sooner.
