REMOVE EXCESS BREAST VOLUME FOR RELIEF IN FLORHAM PARK, SOMERVILLE, AND ALL OF NEW JERSEY

Large breasts can be the cause of growing discomfort or pain in the shoulders and back due to their weight. Additionally, the size of overly large breasts can make participation in exercise or other activities difficult, as well as attract unwanted attention, make clothes appear to fit poorly, chafe, cause tightly pulled bra straps to dig into the skin, and lead to other inconveniences and problems. A breast reduction at New Jersey’s The Peer Group for Plastic Surgery—serving patients in Somerville, Florham Park, Livingston, Morristown, and beyond—can help. The surgery involves removing excess tissue, including skin and fat, to resize the breasts. Our plastic surgeons specialize in breast reduction surgery techniques, customizing the procedure to provide patients with a more balanced figure and an improved quality of life.

WHAT IS BREAST REDUCTION?

Much of a breast’s weight is made up of fat, so breast reduction surgery for Somerville, Florham Park, and other patients typically involves removing the excess fat cells that contribute to the bulk. This is not merely a liposuction procedure, however. Great care must be taken to preserve the natural shape of the breasts so that they still appear symmetrical with each other and proportional to the rest of the body. Breast reduction also involves removing skin and breast tissue, all with the goal of reducing bulk and preserving natural-looking contours.

Every reduction is unique, but this plastic surgery procedure typically involves your surgeon making an incision around the nipple and areola to allow excess fat and breast tissue to be removed. The incision is carefully positioned in order to reduce visible scarring, which is well camouflaged by the areola.

Incisions are also made down the center of the breast and along the inframammary fold, which is where the breast meets the chest. These incisions are kept below the areola to make them less visible.

A breast reduction may also include resizing and repositioning the nipple and areola if necessary so that they rest naturally in the correct anatomic position.

WHICH BREAST REDUCTION TECHNIQUE IS IDEAL?

Some patients want a modest reduction for cosmetic reasons, while others would like significant volume removed in order to relieve chronic back aches and shoulder pain.

The degree of reduction desired, as well as other factors—such as a patient’s unique anatomy and health—will guide your plastic surgeon in choosing the ideal technique. This will all be discussed at your consultation.

WHAT IS BREAST REDUCTION RECOVERY LIKE?

All breast surgery procedures—breast reduction included—result in some common side effects, including swelling, bruising, and discomfort. These should be expected to last for one to two weeks but should fade gradually on their own as you rest.

That rest is especially important since your body heals best if you properly care for it and avoid anything taxing. Ideally, you should plan to take time off from anything that would prevent you from recuperating after your reduction surgery, including work and social activities. Exercise, in particular, should be avoided for four to six weeks, as should any heavy lifting—although light movement, such as walking, is an important part of the recovery process since it gets the blood moving and encourages natural healing.

It is helpful to arrange for someone to care for you following your breast reduction, which would allow you to recover properly and stick with your aftercare instructions.
