Chin Augmentation Florham Park, NJ

Chin augmentation is a surgical procedure that uses chin implants to enhance the shape and projection of the chin.

The chin is a pivotal part of one’s aesthetic appearance and facial balance. A weak or recessed chin can impact how the entire face looks. Oftentimes, a chin augmentation can help patients achieve their aesthetic goals by providing a stronger, more proportional chin. As a result, patients feel more confident and happy with their appearance.

At The Peer Group, our surgical team can perform a chin augmentation to improve your overall facial definition and profile.

If you are ready to learn more about chin augmentation, please schedule a consultation online or call our Florham Park and Somerville offices at (973) 822-3000.

About Chin Augmentation

Chin augmentation, also known as mentoplasty, is a surgical procedure. Chin augmentation can address several chin-related concerns, such as a recessed chin, soft tissue deficiencies, pre-jowl volume loss, and more. (1) At The Peer Group, our surgical team primarily performs this treatment using state-of-the-art chin implants.

About Chin Implants

Chin implants are medical devices that surgeons place on top of the bone in the chin to improve facial appearance. Chin implants are one of the most common methods for chin augmentation, and they are highly effective for addressing structural anomalies and a naturally weak chin. Chin implants may be made out of silicone, high-density porous polyethylene, or other approved materials. (1)

Benefits

Chin augmentation offers several benefits, including:

  • Enhanced Facial Harmony: Correcting the shape and appearance of your chin can improve the balance of your facial features.
  • Rejuvenated Appearance: Improving the projection and definition of your chin can restore a more youthful look to your face.
  • Permanent Results: The results of chin augmentation are designed to be stable and long-lasting, with patients experiencing typically permanent results that usually require no maintenance.
  • Minimal Scarring: Our surgeons take great care when placing the incisions for chin augmentation; they are often hidden beneath the chin or within the mouth, depending on the treatment plan.
  • Personalized Surgical Plans: Our surgeons fully tailor each procedure to the individual and their unique goals, concerns, and anatomy.
  • Elevated Self-Esteem: After seeing the results of their procedure, many patients report improvements in their self-confidence. This may contribute to a greater sense of overall body positivity.

Candidates

Suitable candidates for chin augmentation include those seeking a long-term solution to improving the shape, symmetry, and projection of their chin. Patients with an overpronounced or recessed chin may also benefit from this procedure, as well as those experiencing volume loss or developing jowls.

Anyone interested in chin augmentation should be in good general health without any underlying medical conditions that may affect their recovery or results. Patients should maintain realistic expectations regarding their results, and they should also ideally be nonsmokers. Our surgical team will determine each patient’s candidacy for this procedure during their personal consultation.

Personal Consultation

The first step to sculpting your chin is attending a personal consultation at either our Florham Park or Somerville office. Your surgeon will meet with you to discuss what chin augmentation is, as well as this procedure’s limitations and benefits. They will ask you about your medical history, concerns, and treatment goals. They will also perform a physical evaluation to assess the condition of your chin and your overall facial anatomy.

They will use this information to finalize your eligibility and create your surgical plan. Your surgeon will recommend the most effective strategies to deliver your desired appearance.

Preparation

Once you decide to proceed with your chin augmentation procedure, you will receive a set of detailed pre-operative instructions to help you prepare. These may vary depending on the details of your surgical plan, but typically include directions such as:

  • Stopping the use of blood-thinning medications and supplements.
  • Discontinuing the use of tobacco, nicotine, and alcohol several weeks before and after the procedure.
  • Pre-arranging transportation home after your procedure.
  • Preparing to take time away from your responsibilities to focus on resting.
  • Filling prescriptions before your procedure.
  • Arriving at your appointment with clean skin that is free from any skincare or makeup products.

We also advise stocking your pantry with softer foods, as it may be difficult to chew harder foods during your initial recovery period.

By following these instructions and any others given to you by your provider, you can ensure a successful procedure and a smooth recovery.

Procedure

When you arrive for your procedure, we will first cleanse and sterilize your skin, then administer anesthesia. (2)

After this, your surgeon will begin placing incisions. They will place incisions either beneath the chin or inside the mouth. These techniques are the submental approach and the intraoral approach, respectively. These incision sites minimize the visibility of any potential scarring. The submental approach offers greater visibility and access to the chin, but the intraoral approach avoids the appearance of external scarring entirely. (1)

After making incisions, your surgeon will create a pocket below your facial muscle layers. They will carefully place the implant and secure it in place using sutures. Finally, they will close the incisions with sutures and apply a protective dressing.

Your chin augmentation procedure may take between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the technique and the extent of the corrections.

Recovery

Chin augmentations are outpatient procedures, which means you will return home on the same day as your procedure. You can expect swelling, bruising, and discomfort around the chin, but these effects are temporary. Resting with your head elevated and using cold compresses will also help you manage them. During this time, we strongly recommend following a diet consisting of softer foods, as chewing may cause irritation and discomfort.

You will be able to return to work after approximately 7-10 days. However, you will need to continue refraining from engaging or participating in high-impact or strenuous activities for several more weeks, or until your surgeon clears you to return.

Results

You may notice improvements in your appearance immediately after your procedure, but the full results of your chin augmentation will manifest after any residual swelling subsides. Your chin will appear more shapely and symmetrical, and it may enhance the overall proportions of your natural facial structure. Your jawline will also appear sharper and more defined.

The results of chin augmentation are permanent, allowing you to enjoy your renewed appearance for years to come.
