Affects of Cleft Lips and Palates

Cleft lips and palates are among the most commonly-occurring congenital deformities, affecting an estimated one in 700 newborns worldwide. These congenital anomalies vary widely in severity, and many factors influence their development. While research continues, the cause of these deformities has yet to be precisely pinpointed. Unless they undergo reconstructive surgery, children around the world with these afflictions are often ostracized within their communities because of their appearance and speech impediments, and in some cultures shunned entirely, with their very survival in question. Children with cleft lips and palates can sometimes also suffer from malnutrition, also a threat to their lives.

In the U.S., these impediments are typically treated within the first 12 months of life, but the outlook is not as bright for children elsewhere.

Founded by Dr. Peer

The late Dr. Lyndon Peer, a world-renowned plastic surgeon and pioneer in cleft lip and palate reconstruction, trained many doctors in his specialty to alleviate these problems both in the United States and throughout the world. These reconstructive plastic surgeons and other physicians have donated their time and experience, traveling internationally to operate on patients and train local physicians to provide this care on their own. To help carry on this tradition, Dr. Peer created The Peer Foundation to provide financial support for cleft lip and palate research, to train doctors in the art of facial reconstruction, and to support their surgical efforts.

Supporting a Variety of Organizations

While The Peer Foundation’s endowment was initially funded by Dr. Peer’s estate, it continues to receive donations from concerned and generous friends in New Jersey and all across the country and the world. The Peer Foundation has helped fund international trips by organizations such as Interplast and Healing the Children. Other organizations supported by the Peer Foundation are the Cleft Palate Educational Foundation and The American Association of Plastic Surgeons. The Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation also receives annual funding from the Peer Foundation and sponsors training at U.S. institutions for international plastic surgeons from under-served countries who are committed to implementing their new knowledge and techniques for the benefit of their native countrymen.

As a 501 (c) 3 organization, all contributions made to The Peer Foundation are tax-deductible to the extent permissible by law and all proceeds are used exclusively for its charitable and educational mission.
