Breast Implants procedures

by Isaac Starker, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Breast augmentation surgery one of the most popular and common plastic surgery procedures performed, providing women with a simple and safe way to enhance the size and shape of their breasts. Among the most important factors in the outcome of breast augmentation is the choice of the breast implant – the liquid filled membranes that provide the volume and firmness for the augmented breasts. Breast implants come in a variety of sizes, types and styles, and the quality of implants can also differ. This means that anyone considering cosmetic breast augmentation should understand the differences among implants, so she can make the best choice for her situation. Our New Jersey board certified plastic surgeons at The Peer Group in believe the high-quality FDA approved implants we use create the fullest, most natural looking and beautiful breasts.

Two main types of breast implants are used for cosmetic surgery breast augmentation: Silicone breast implants and saline breast implants. Silicone breast augmentation implants are made of a silicone outer shell filled with a soft cohesive silicone gel. Silicone implants are known to look and feel more natural than their saline counterparts, and they are less likely to exhibit a rippling appearance. They are often advantageous for breast augmentation in women who have very thin body frames, or for those patients receiving breast implants as part of a breast reconstruction surgery.

Saline breast enlargement implants also have an outer silicone shell, but are filled with a salt-water solution. They are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. Saline breast implants are usually filled after they have been inserted into the breast area. This allows for a smaller incision for the implant, and for the breast augmentation surgeon to visually determine the right volume for the implant.

The FDA recently released a report on an association between breast implants and a rare form of lymphoma, but as we noted in an earlier blog, the FDA report found no link between breast implants and cancer, and breast augmentation risks are low. So if you’re interested in a more enhanced look, consult with an experienced breast augmentation surgeon, who can help you make the right choices for your personal aesthetic goals.
