Surgically Remove Double-Chin Fat in New Jersey

A double chin can be difficult to get rid of. Losing fat on its own is a challenge for many people, and spot reducing bulky areas—focusing specifically on the neck, for example—is not possible with diet and exercise alone. Neck lipo at New Jersey’s The Peer Group is a straightforward fat-reduction procedure that provides results that are quickly noticeable. By suctioning out fat cells, the surgery improves definition and creates a well-contoured profile.

Since the area below the face is prone to showing signs of aging in multiple ways, our plastic surgeons often pair neck lipo with another facial surgery technique: a neck lift. The goal is to address excess fat and lax skin together so that the end result looks natural and complements the facial features above.

What Is Neck Lipo?

Liposuction is a common plastic surgery procedure that can be performed on many areas of the body where stubborn bulk develops. Bulges are caused by significant numbers of large fat cells, which grow in size as a person gains weight. Losing weight causes these cells to shrink, but their overall numbers remain the same. Also, as noted above, diets can’t target isolated pockets, such as love handles or a double chin.

Removing fat cells via surgery solves both of these problems, allowing the surgeon to focus body-contouring efforts on chosen features and physically taking excess fat cells out of the body. This reduces the bulk and creates a sleeker appearance.

Incisions for neck lipo are made under the chin, or possibly below the ears, depending on whether it’s being combined with a lift and other specifics of the procedure. These sites are chosen because they hide scars well.

Next, a tube is inserted via the incisions and used to both loosen and suction out fat cells. This tube is called a cannula and is specifically designed for this purpose. Finally, the incisions will be sealed.

What Is Neck Lipo Recovery Like?

Fat removal involves manually loosening the fat cells, so neck lipo patients can expect their neck area to feel sore and appear bruised and swollen for about one week after their procedure. The body will heal throughout this time. To encourage that healing process, we advise avoiding heavy lifting, exercise, and any activity that causes strain for at least a month.

The best way to maintain the new contours is to stick with healthy lifestyle habits, including diet and routine exercise once it is safe to do so. New weight gain can increase the size of the remaining fat cells, which can not only lead to a new bulge, but also stretch out the skin.

Are There Alternatives to Neck Lipo?

Surgery creates new contours that are visible as soon as the swelling subsides, but not all patients want neck lipo to address a double chin. Nonsurgical Kybella® is also an option, using an injectable form of deoxycholic acid to break down fat cells for a more gradual and subtle reduction.
