Blehparoplasty Florham Park, NJ

The eyes are one of the first areas of the face that begin to develop signs of aging. Over time, the upper and lower lids alike can start to sag, resulting in a constantly angry or tired-looking appearance. A blepharoplasty at NJ’s The Peer Group is ideal for addressing this cosmetic problem, as well as for correcting drooping upper lids that impair vision. Since this eyelid surgery can serve both aesthetic and functional purposes, our plastic surgeons train in advanced facial surgery techniques to provide patients with results that help them both look good and see well.

Before and After Photos

Procedure

Upper eyelid skin is especially thin and prone to drooping as collagen and elastin break down over time. Age also causes muscles and other tissues to weaken, leading to a general downward migration as structures that once kept the eyelids elevated lose their ability to provide support. Even fat deposits shift downward, all of which can cause a condition known as ptosis—the medical term for sagging.

An upper eyelid blepharoplasty involves incisions positioned in the natural creases of the eyelid itself, through which your plastic surgeon can remove excess skin, muscle, and fat, as well as reposition the remaining fat to sculpt a firm and tight lid.

Lower eyelids also lose their elasticity over time, and this area is also prone to the downward migration of fat deposits. Unlike the upper lids, which can partially cover the eyes, sagging in the lower lids causes bagginess and “pouches” to form. It can also create a condition where the lower lids pull down and away from the eyes, exposing more of the underside of the eyeballs and the inside of the lids themselves.

Like its upper counterpart, lower-lid blepharoplasty involves well-positioned incisions, the removal of excess fat and skin, the repositioning of tissues, and the securing of everything in a newly elevated position. Both upper lid blepharoplasty and lower lid blepharoplasty can be performed on their own or combined as desired.

Eyebrows can also droop with age, pushing down over the eyes and contributing to an unwanted look of anger or confusion. For this problem, a brow lift is ideal and can complement a blepharoplasty well.

Surgery Types

The ideal blepharoplasty technique for a particular patient depends on whether they are dealing with sagging in the upper lids, lower lids, or both. The goal of eyelid surgery is not just to correct lax skin, but to maintain or improve facial symmetry. With this in mind, slightly different approaches may be employed on the right and left side, depending on the degree of sagging present.

Recovery

Eyelid surgery typically causes bruising, swelling, and localized soreness or discomfort—as with just about all plastic surgery procedures—but patients may also experience temporary blurred vision. It is important to take time away from work, recreation, and social activities while your eyelids heal and your vision returns to normal.

Cost

Eyelid surgery is remarkably variable, with some patients needing work on only one sagging upper lid and others requiring correction on all four lids. Eyelid surgery costs will be discussed during an initial consultation when your plastic surgeon can determine the scope of the surgery needed to correct the skin laxity and provide natural-looking, symmetrical results.
