Labial Reduction Surgery in New Jersey Can Address Post-Childbirth Changes in an Intimate Area

Few people see your labia, which is why labiaplasty at our New Jersey practice is one of the most personal and intimate procedures we offer. This surgery is for anyone who wants to reclaim the look of their vaginal lips—especially the labia minora—by addressing the physical changes caused by pregnancy and childbirth.

While every plastic surgery at The Peer Group is handled with skill and extreme care by our experienced plastic surgeons, we understand that labiaplasty can be especially sensitive—in every sense of the word. We work with compassion and discretion, ensuring that you feel comfortable with your decision and the surgery itself, every step of the way.

What Is Labiaplasty?

Many patients want labia that are small in size. This makes them difficult to see, as well as unobtrusive when it comes to physical activity. Childbirth can cause the labia to change in size and shape, making them more visible and prone to friction. Some people also have labia that developed on their own to be naturally large. Either way, the labia’s size can lead to embarrassment, a reluctance to wear certain clothing items (such as yoga pants, which may reveal larger labia), and discomfort during exercise, sexual intimacy, and other activities. All of this can combine to reduce self-confidence.

A labiaplasty reduces the size of the labia by trimming away tissue and creating vaginal lips that are smaller, more symmetrical, and less obtrusive.

How Can I Choose Whether a Labiaplasty Is Right for Me?

The decision to get labial reduction surgery is very personal, but it should never be made because someone else is pressuring you or you feel you should change yourself to please another person. We can discuss your motivations and options with you during a personalized and private conversation. If you are unhappy with the look and feel of your labia and are confident that a physical change is what you want for yourself, a labiaplasty can make a difference.

What Does a Labiaplasty Involve?

Labiaplasty patients at our on-site AAAASF-certified operating room first work with a board-certified anesthesiologist who will administer an anesthetic to reduce sensation and make for a more comfortable surgery. Your plastic surgeon will then make small incisions around the labia, allowing the tissue to be trimmed so that the vaginal lips are smaller. The incisions are then sealed, and the procedure is over.

What Does Labiaplasty Recovery Involve?

There will be some discomfort, bruising, and swelling at first, all of which can “hide” the ultimate surgical results. The new look and feel of the labia will become more apparent over time. You should take some time off from work and other scheduled appointments and activities to allow yourself space to heal. It is also important to abstain from exertion—and especially sexual intercourse—for a minimum of six weeks.

What Results Does a Labiaplasty Provide?

Reduced and shaped labia will maintain their new look and size best if you continue to live a healthy lifestyle. Since pregnancy and childbirth can cause trauma and physical changes to the labia, we advise anyone considering the procedure to be sure that they have no further plans for children. Having a baby after the surgery can alter the results and cause the labia to appear larger and different once again.

What Other Childbirth-Related Changes Can Be Addressed?

Pregnancy—and everything related to it—causes changes to far more than just the labia. Body surgery options at The Peer Group include tummy tucks to address sagging belly skin, breast augmentation or breast reduction to create proportional breast contours, and liposuction to remove stubborn fat. All of these procedures, and more, can be combined into what is known as a Mommy Makeover.
