What Is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is a treatment used to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles on the face. To understand how BOTOX® works, it can help to first understand how these dynamic wrinkles form.

Check by treatment area for the necessary estimated units of BOTOX® at New Jersey’s The Peer Group.

Injectors use varying amounts of BOTOX® at New Jersey’s The Peer Group, from a minimum of two or three units to address a dimpled chin, downturned corners of the mouth, or lowered eyebrows to a maximum of 25 to 30 units for treating forehead and frown lines. Treatments for crow’s feet and bunny lines fall in the middle, using 4 to 10 or 15 units per side.

Aging skin is drier, less elastic, and looser than youthful skin, all of which makes it more prone to showing lines and wrinkles. While a young person’s skin can be pulled into folds or furrows multiple times a day and then return to a smooth state with no trouble or sign that a muscle contraction ever took place, older skin can’t transition as well. As a result, everything from winking to drinking from a straw to smiling or frowning can cause creases to appear—and ultimately stay.

The problem is repetition. Facial muscles that pull the skin into the same wrinkles over and over and over again for decades eventually leave their mark in the form of visible lines. Not only do these dynamic wrinkles become increasingly pronounced when facial expressions are made, but they can also remain even when the face is at rest.

Injectable BOTOX® contains a naturally occurring ingredient known as “botulinum toxin,” which blocks the nerve signals that trigger muscle contractions. Without the successful transmission of these nerve signals, the facial muscles stay relaxed instead of contracting when certain expressions are made.

Keeping a few specifically targeted muscles at rest means certain lines will not appear, even when you raise your eyebrows or squint your eyes. Stopping muscle activity can also prevent existing lines from being more deeply etched into the skin.

What Can BOTOX® Treat?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is FDA approved for addressing three dynamic wrinkles: frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines.

Frown lines or “glabellar lines” are also commonly referred to as “11s,” because they typically take the shape of two short, vertical creases that develop between the eyebrows. Common expressions that cause them to appear are surprise, confusion, and concern.

Crow’s feet are also known as “lateral canthal lines” for the way they spread horizontally from the outer corners of the eyes. They get their bird-related nickname for the way they sort of resemble multiple long claws—at least if you squint. Unfortunately, squinting is a common activity that causes crow’s feet to appear, along with hearty smiling.

Forehead lines are long, horizontal creases on the forehead. Also called “worry lines,” these furrows are most obvious when the brows are knit in concern or thought, or when the eyebrows are raised in surprise, delight, or alarm.

How Can I Choose Whether BOTOX® Is Best for Me?

A quick Internet search can help you find “BOTOX® in my area” or “BOTOX® near me,” but it’s not as good at answering “Is BOTOX® right for me?” For that, we recommend arranging a consultation with an experienced injector, such as any of the board-certified plastic surgeons at The Peer Group. A qualified and skin-focused physician can explain what the injectable can and can’t do, examine your own skin and consider your aesthetic goals, and then make a recommendation as to the ideal nonsurgical treatment for you.

From there, the choice is yours. BOTOX® is quite effective for a great many people, but it’s not the only—or best—option for everyone. Some people want to smooth out lines other than dynamic wrinkles. Others may be allergic to the formula used in BOTOX®. Whatever your unique situation, a consultation with a plastic surgeon is the important first step.

What Does a BOTOX® Treatment Session Involve?

One of The Peer Group’s physicians will make a series of injections into the desired treatment area. This part of the treatment is generally well-tolerated by most patients, and it takes only a few minutes to complete. At worst, patients tend to describe the feel of their injections as similar to small pinches.

In all, a full BOTOX® session takes less than 15 minutes to perform, which is why it is often referred to as a “lunchtime treatment.” In other words, you can schedule a visit for the middle of your day, leaving you time to get done what you need to accomplish in the morning before the session and in the afternoon and evening after.

What is BOTOX® Recovery Like?

There is no formal recovery process or downtime required after BOTOX® treatments. You may experience some minor bruising, swelling, or sensitivity in the treatment area, but these effects are very common and typically fade within just a few days. You can return to work and all other usual activities as soon as your appointment is done.

What Results Can I Expect from BOTOX®?

The results from your BOTOX® injections will become visible in the days following your treatment. Keep in mind that you will not see your desired change right away, and it can actually take up to a week for the active ingredient to fully take effect and put the targeted muscles to rest. Once it does, you can expect your results to last up to three months on average.

Once their results begin to fade and increased muscle activity allows their dynamic wrinkles to become more prominent, many patients choose to receive subsequent treatments to maintain their results. We can discuss an ongoing plan with you to answer your question of “How often should I get BOTOX®?”

How Much Does BOTOX® Cost?

The exact cost of treatment will vary depending on your unique treatment goals and the extent of treatment necessary. During your initial consultation, we thoroughly discuss your cosmetic goals in order to determine the BOTOX® approach that is best for you. Once we develop a customized treatment plan, we will be able to inform you of the exact cost of your treatment.

What Other Facial Rejuvenation Treatments Are Available?

BOTOX® is not the only botulinum toxin-based injectable available. The Peer Group also offers several other similar treatments, collectively known as neuromodulators. These include Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau™, all of which relax facial muscles to reduce dynamic wrinkles.

Lines known as “static wrinkles” appear where age-related volume loss and other skin changes cause folds or creases to form independently of muscle activity. For these wrinkles, a volume-adding dermal filler from the Juvederm®, RHA® Revance, or Restylane® collections would be a more appropriate and effective choice.
