ACHIEVE SLIMMER CONTOURS WITH SURGICAL FAT REDUCTION FOR SOMERVILLE, FLORHAM PARK, AND ALL OF NEW JERSEY

Whether you are nearing your ideal body weight or have been generally slim your entire life, you can still deal with stubborn fat pockets. This unwanted fat can make your contours appear fuller than you would like or create an obvious bulge in a specific area. Liposuction at New Jersey’s The Peer Group—serving Florham Park, Somerville, Livingston, Morristown, and beyond—is designed to address this specific phenomenon, known as “diet-resistant fat.” Our experienced plastic surgeons work with both women and men, helping them to get a customized and naturally slimmer look.

WHAT IS LIPOSUCTION?

To understand liposuction, it can be helpful to know how fat is stored in the body. Fat does not “float” freely in the belly area or elsewhere, but is contained inside cells that grow and shrink depending on how many calories are being consumed and burned. The number of these fat cells in the body is generally established by puberty, so they do not multiply when someone gains weight. Instead, the individual fat cells each grow in size.

Targeting specific fat cells for shrinking is not possible. While reducing calorie intake by dieting and burning more calories by exercising can cause overall weight loss, genetics typically determine which areas slim down first—or at all. That means it’s possible for someone who wants a leaner abdomen to watch their double chin and thick thighs go away, but be seemingly stuck with a persistent gut.

Fortunately, plastic surgery can help. Liposuction is a body surgery technique used to contour areas where stubborn fat cells tend to resist both diet and exercise. Although liposuction is not a weight-loss method, it is ideal for shaping parts of the body where fat is especially stubborn.

WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS FOR LIPOSUCTION?

Liposuction can be applied just about anywhere fat cells congregate in bulk, from large areas like the abdomen to small pockets, such as below the chin. The Peer Group’s experienced plastic surgeons will tailor the procedure to the patient, working with precision and care to create contours that are proportional and blend with the rest of the body. The goal of liposuction is to create natural-looking results.

HOW CAN I CHOOSE WHETHER LIPOSUCTION IS BEST FOR ME?

Patients considering liposuction in the Somerville and Florham Park area should understand that the procedure is for cosmetic results only. That means anyone who wants surgical fat reduction should be in general good health and already be at—or at least near—their ideal weight for their height. A Peer Group plastic surgeon can assess you with a physical exam to determine whether liposuction would work well for you, since there are also non-surgical fat-reduction options available. These options provide results that are more gradual and not as dramatic as what is possible via surgery.

Anyone who wants a better idea of what liposuction results can look like is encouraged to visit our before-and-after photo gallery to see actual patients who chose The Peer Group for body contouring.

The Peer Group’s plastic surgeons use a special tool, called a cannula, to dislodge unwanted fat cells and then suction them out during liposuction in their New Jersey-based AAAASF-certified operating room. This cannula is inserted through a small incision, then positioned at the precise depth where fat cells congregate between the skin and muscle layers.

WHAT DOES LIPOSUCTION INVOLVE?

Every liposuction surgery at our on-site AAAASF-certified operating room starts with an anesthetic—administered by a specialist—to make the procedure more comfortable.

While all liposuction procedures involve removing unwanted fat, the surgery specifics will depend on where this fat is located, as well as how many areas are being reduced. In any case, the first step will be making incisions in the target area. Our plastic surgeons make every effort to keep these incisions as small and inconspicuous as possible.

Next, a tool called a cannula will be inserted into the incision, and this cannula is used to both dislodge and vacuum out the fat. The cannula serves as a wand that frees the stubborn fat cells from the surrounding tissues, as well as a tube that suctions the newly loosened fat from the body.

After the fat is removed, the incisions will be sealed and allowed to heal. The resulting small scars are often camouflaged by natural body contours or can easily be covered with clothing.

WHAT IS LIPOSUCTION RECOVERY LIKE?

Recovery after liposuction depends on how extensive the surgery itself was. In general, the greater the amount of fat removed, the more recuperation will be necessary—although the recovery process is typically well managed no matter the details.

Liposuction patients should expect a few weeks of swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the surgery area. The Peer Group team recommends planning ahead to be able to take time off from work, social activities, and other obligations.

Using this time to rest and heal does not mean being completely inactive, however! After a few days of down time following the surgery, patients are encouraged to move around to get blood flowing. Occasional light walks are a good choice, but activities that involve intense exertion or heavy lifting should be avoided for at least six weeks.

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT FROM LIPOSUCTION?

The initial swelling after surgery can hide the true liposuction results for a short while, but once this side effect resolves, the new contours will be visible. These contours should be expected to last for years, with their longevity depending on how well you take care of your body. Liposuction can’t prevent changes that might occur in the future due to an increase in weight. For this reason, we encourage all of our patients to maintain healthy lifestyle habits in order to make their results last for as long as possible. This means eating healthy foods and getting regular exercise. Avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption is also a good idea.

WHAT DOES LIPOSUCTION COST?

The cost of your unique liposuction surgery will be discussed at your consultation when the plastic surgeon will be able to determine the scope and details of the procedure. Cost is determined by the extent of the fat reduction needed, as well as how many areas are being treated.

Patients with questions about financing can visit our page that focuses on available payment options.

WHAT BODY CONTOURING PROCEDURES BEYOND LIPOSUCTION ARE AVAILABLE?

Surgical fat reduction gets rid of excess volume in targeted areas, but it is not the solution for people who want to address contours that are the result of lax skin. Various lifts—including an arm lift, breast lift, or thigh lift—are better for removing redundant, sagging tissue. Similar contouring surgery that focuses specifically on the abdomen is known as a tummy tuck, which can include liposuction in addition to skin tightening. Multiple contouring options can be combined into general post-weight loss body surgery, as well as a “Mommy Makeover” to take care of the many physical changes caused by pregnancy and nursing.

Patients who want some fat reduction, but who are not ready to choose a more involved surgery, can choose nonsurgical CoolSculpting® (which uses low temperatures to kill off fat cells), Kybella® (which uses a dietary acid to break up fat cells), or SculpSure® (which uses laser energy to “melt” fat cells).
