Enjoy the Benefits of Light-Based Exfoliation in New Jersey

Skin cells are in a constant state of turnover, with new cells born in a lower layer to work their way up to the surface. That means the outermost layer of skin is made up of dead cells, which can give the surface a rough and dry texture, as well as magnify the appearance of lines and other signs of aging. Laser skin resurfacing at New Jersey’s The Peer Group takes these dead cells away, resulting in a smoother, softer, and more youthful-looking face.

The Peer Group’s board-certified physicians handle the laser skin resurfacing treatments, which can be performed as stand-alone nonsurgical treatments or paired with plastic surgery, such as a facelift.

What Is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing is an advanced skin rejuvenation technique that uses laser technology to exfoliate the skin. The device is highly customizable, so the strength of the treatment can be adjusted based on the patient’s skin type and cosmetic needs.

At The Peer Group, we use Fraxel Dual 1550/1927 for skin resurfacing with a laser. This device works by sending numerous microscopic columns of light into the skin in the treatment area. Each column triggers collagen production and other healing responses. As the body repairs the columns made by the laser, it also improves the look and health of the surrounding skin that was left intact.

The combination of skin exfoliation and collagen production can be used to address fine wrinkles and lines, spots, actinic keratoses and other sun damage, scars, and more. In fact, laser skin resurfacing as an acne scar treatment is one of the most popular uses for the device.

When it comes to exfoliation with lasers as opposed to chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing is able to produce more dramatic results more quickly—and has the added benefit of stimulating collagen production.

Laser Skin Resurfacing Details

Because of the heat generated by a laser skin resurfacing treatment, the session may involve the use of an anesthetic to improve comfort—depending on where the laser energy is being applied. The session itself involves a physician using a handheld Fraxel Dual device to exfoliate the treatment area with precision.

Every session is unique, but a laser skin resurfacing treatment can be expected to take up to an hour to complete.

Laser Skin Resurfacing Recovery and Results

The side effects from a laser skin resurfacing treatment are similar to a sunburn: redness, irritation, and possible peeling. It is important to protect the skin against damage from ultraviolet radiation while healing. Avoid sun exposure as much as possible, wear clothing to cover treated areas if going outside, and be sure to apply sunscreen. Using a moisturizer can also be beneficial.

As collagen levels rise and healing continues in the skin, patients will see their desired results appear and improve in the weeks and months after their session. Skin will tighten, feel smoother, and look clearer over time after a single session, but The Peer Group team often recommends multiple laser skin resurfacing sessions to achieve optimal results. The number of treatments depends on the patient and their goals, which can be discussed during the initial consultation.

What Other Laser and Light Treatments Are Available?

In addition to laser skin resurfacing, The Peer Group also offers laser scar revision to focus on lasting marks from surgery, trauma, or disease; laser hair reduction; and laser vein treatment to reduce visible vessels.

Though IPL is not a laser, the intense pulses of light can also address spots, fine lines, and other common cosmetic complaints. Arrange a consultation to discuss personal aesthetic goals and discover which treatment may work best.
