What Is Breast Implant Removal?

Breast augmentation is an effective breast surgery that improves many patients’ self-image and confidence, but it is not intended to provide “forever” results. Although the volume-enhancing effects are long-lasting, a patient’s body will continue to age, going through changes that can eventually alter the look of augmented breasts. Older skin is less sturdy and elastic than youthful skin, so larger implants can pull the breasts downward and cause sagging. Some patients find that their personal tastes change as they go through the years, leading them to decide they’d like a different look for their chest in their 50s than they did in their 30s.

The implants, too, will age, with older implants having a greater chance of rupture. Although rupture is a rare occurrence, it is possible, with the risk increasing a small percentage each year that goes by.

Breast implant removal is the term for a plastic surgery procedure that addresses these and other reasons a patient may want the devices taken out, whether they are saline, traditional silicone, or form-stable silicone.

Our plastic surgeons at The Peer Group are often able to use the same incision areas as the original augmentation procedure, which avoids the creation of new scars. Once the implants are out, the incisions can be closed, or new implants of a different style or size can be inserted in their place.

It is also possible to pair breast implant removal with a breast lift to correct sagging or a breast reduction to remove excess tissue that may have developed with age. If you have implants and would like to learn about your options, we recommend that you start with a consultation.

What Is Breast Implant Removal Recovery Like?

The recovery process for breast implant removal is similar to the recovery following the initial breast implant placement. All of the same expected side effects—bruising, swelling, and discomfort—tend to develop shortly after the surgery, then fade throughout the following weeks.

Patients who have had an augmentation before should also remember what it was like to heal. Plan to take time away from activities that take you out of the house, including both work and social obligations. This allows your body to heal as you rest and avoid exertion. Intense exercise should be avoided for about six weeks, and this includes exercise-like activities, such as lifting heavy boxes. Light exercise, however, is encouraged in order to get blood flowing and prevent complications related to being sedentary for long periods. Try taking short walks once you have had a couple of days to recuperate.
