Address Lasting Marks from Acne, Surgery, or Trauma in New Jersey

Laser scar revision at New Jersey’s The Peer Group is an advanced laser treatment, similar to laser skin resurfacing, designed to reduce the appearance of scars. Using precise laser energy, our physicians are able to exfoliate scar tissue and stimulate collagen production in the skin beneath.

As a result of this advanced nonsurgical treatment, the scar will become less noticeable, with noticeable improvements in both skin color and texture. This is the ideal laser treatment for “fading” surgical scars, and it also works well for scars on the legs, arms, and other areas of the body.

What Is Laser Scar Revision?

When skin is damaged or lost, the body repairs the wound by building new skin out of collagen fibers. The process focuses on function, not form, so while the newly generated tissue closes the opening in the skin, it may not look like the rest of the surface. Scars can be a different color, texture, and height from the surrounding skin.

Laser scar revision works to make the scar tissue less obvious. The Peer Group physicians use the Fraxel Dual 1550/1927 laser, which uses powerful and focused light of a single wavelength to exfoliate the surface and create collagen-generating columns in the skin. Each column prompts collagen-making cells to get to work in repairing the microscopic damage.

By removing some of the outermost tissue and triggering new collagen production within the area where a scar is present, this treatment can make a scar appear more like the skin around it.

Laser Scar Revision Details

Scars come in an unlimited number of sizes and shapes, so each patient’s laser scar revision experience is going to be unique. Some sessions will be very short and involve a small area of skin, while others will be more involved and require the use of an anesthetic to reduce sensation in the area.

For the treatment itself, a physician will use the handheld Fraxel Dual laser device to treat the targeted scar tissue with precision. Patients tend to tolerate this well, especially when an anesthetic is used to reduce the feeling of heat as the laser energy enters the skin.

The amount of time a laser scar revision treatment takes will depend on the size and number of scars being addressed. A session may take as little as 15 minutes or as long as 45 minutes for multiple scars.

Laser Scar Revision Recovery and Results

Skin treated by a laser will be irritated, sensitive, and red in the following days, with the side effects resembling symptoms of a sunburn. While the skin heals, it is important to protect it from ultraviolet radiation, which can damage especially sensitive skin and lead to pigmentation irregularities and other problems. Patients should also be sure to moisturize their skin regularly so that it heals properly and does not dry out.

Healing typically takes a few days, but there are few outward signs of treatment as the laser is directed toward the deeper layers of the skin to get at the scar tissue. All activities can be resumed right away after treatment.

Collagen takes time to build up to levels that make a noticeable change, so the results of a laser scar revision session will become increasingly apparent over the weeks and months after the treatment. Our physicians have broad experience in this procedure, and we have found that four sessions, spaced a month apart, produce the most ideal results. Additional treatments can be performed if desired and if the scar continues to show improvement.

What Else Can Laser and Light Treatments Accomplish?

Besides laser scar revision and skin resurfacing, focused light can also be used for laser hair reduction, and laser vein treatments. Powerful intense pulsed light (IPL) can also be beneficial for improving the look of the skin by lightening spots, smoothing fine lines, and more.
