Skin Care - Chemical Peels, At-Home Skin Care, and Microdermabrasion

The Peer Skin Center is a valuable component of our comprehensive plastic surgery facility. Our complete skin care program includes both in-office and home treatment programs. Our diverse staff of nurses and skin care consultants performs thorough skin cleansing, skin peels, and skin hydration, and offer make-up instruction. These services provide a great benefit in maintaining the quality of young skin and improving the appearance of dry, oily, acne-prone, or sun damaged skin. Skin treatment plays an integral part in many surgical plans, as skin that is healthy responds better to surgery than skin that is dry or unhealthy. Our home care and prescription products, when indicated, are used by both women and men as an effective way of reducing the fine lines of aging skin, correcting sun damage, lessening uneven pigmentation, correcting some forms of acne, and maintaining healthy, young-looking skin. Skin treatments may be used on their own or in combination with plastic surgery procedures such as facelift, or eyelid surgery.

Your skin is made up of two layers, the epidermis and dermis. The top layer is called the epidermis, and is approximately 1/1000 of an inch thick. Since this micro thin layer is directly exposed to the effects of the environment (i.e., sun and pollution), it is frequently damaged, obscuring the skin's clarity, tone, texture, and color. Exfoliation rids the skin of dead cells by removing this top layer. The second layer, the dermis, also affects the appearance of your skin. A healthy life style, consisting of exercise, a balanced diet, adequate rest, the use of sun blocks, avoidance of smoking, and limited alcohol consumption helps to maintain the dermis.

Our Skin Care Center offers a variety of skin care treatments to help improve and maintain your skin's appearance. Microdermabrasion is a non-chemical method of exfoliating the outer skin layers with a series of treatments two to three weeks apart. Superficial chemical peels are a low-risk, pleasant, and convenient way of improving your skin's appearance, and are sometimes referred to as "lunchtime peels." Using alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), such as glycolic or lactic acid, or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), such as salicylic acid, chemical peels transform your skin, leaving a fresh, healthy, youthful glow, softening fine lines, fading dark spots, and diminishing enlarged pores and acne scarring. Deeper, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and phenol peels are other options. These peels require only several days for the skin to recover, and are better suited for correcting more pronounced pigmentation problems and deeper wrinkles. Additional products for improving scars and pigmentation of various skin types are also available at our Skin Care Center in New Jersey.

The Skin Care Center also helps our patients having facial plastic surgery achieve the best possible results. Our skin care programs have been developed to help prepare the skin in advance of surgery, as well as speed and optimize the healing process following surgery and resurfacing procedures. Skin care treatments can help eyelid surgery patients eliminate dark circles and fine wrinkles from under their eyes. The treatments can also smooth surface wrinkles for facelift and browlift patients. When necessary, help is available with camouflage make-up so that skin care patients can resume their normal routines as quickly as possible. If you would like to learn more about how skin treatments enhance the effects of eyelid surgery and facelift, contact our team!
