Facelift, Eyelid Surgery, and More at Our New Jersey and Short Hills Area Center
The face you see in the mirror every morning is a vital part of your identity, and it is often the first impression you make on strangers. It is also one of the first places where the subtle signs of aging are recorded as fine lines and sagging skin. Procedures such as eyelid surgery and facelift from our New Jersey cosmetic surgeons, serving Short Hills, Livingston, Chatham and surrounding areas, can reverse the visible effects of aging. For most patients, successful facial rejuvenation procedures are more than simply a physical transformation, they frequently improve the way people feel about themselves. Facial plastic surgery can make a face firmer and look many years younger.

Facelift
As we age, our faces change. Skin loses its elasticity and begins to bunch in several locations. Muscular bands become more apparent. A facelift can help restore the look of youth by selectively canceling out those features which signify age. Cheeks are elevated, folds are flattened, jowls tightened, the neck is redraped, and excess skin is removed. Your appearance is not replaced through a facelift, but a younger appearance is restored. Our facelift surgeons in New Jersey, serving Short Hills and beyond, have extensive experience with this procedure, and can give you a rejuvenated face and a healthy boost to your self-esteem.
Facelift Procedure
There are several variations of facelifts. Some of the techniques our plastic surgeons use on our facelift patients include:
- Skin-only facelifts
- Intermediate depth facelifts
- Deeper plane facelifts
The type of facelift that is best for your cosmetic goals will be discussed with you in detail at your initial consultation.
The incisions for facelifts are made just in front of the ear and wrap around the back of the ear, hidden within the hairline. The anatomy of the face is defined, muscles and connective tissues may be tightened, and the skin is redraped. Any excess skin is removed. Facelift typically takes about three to five hours to complete, and is performed under anesthesia.

Facelift Recovery
The day after facelift surgery the dressings are removed and the sutures will be taken out over a period of days as you heal. The amount of swelling that you may have is variable, but you can resume most normal activities within a week or two. Few obvious signs of your procedure will generally clear up after three weeks.
The best facelift results are seen in patients who have good skin elasticity and who do not smoke. The Peer Group Plastic Surgery Center is conveniently located for facelift patients in the Short Hills, Livingston, Morristown, and Chatham, New Jersey area. If you would like to learn more about variations of facelift available at The Peer Group, or would like a consultation regarding your candidacy for facelift, contact our plastic surgery practice. Facelift can be combined with other plastic surgery procedures, such as, eyelid lift and or cheek augmentation for a complete facial makeover.

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Droopy, tired-looking eyes can make people look sleepy, angry, or even unhealthy. The Peer Group commonly performs eyelid surgery at our New Jersey facility, serving Short Hills and surrounding areas, to keep its cosmetic surgery patients looking healthy, happy, and enthusiastic. According to the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, the traditional eyelid procedure is the second most common aesthetic procedure performed today on men and women.
Eyelid Surgery Procedure
Eyelid surgery opens up the eyes by removing pockets of fat from beneath the lower eyelid and beneath the eyebrow. Depending on your needs, you may benefit from upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or a combination of both.
- Upper eyelid surgery trims away excess skin that is giving you a tired appearance and/or affecting your vision. Our plastic surgeon will then lift the remaining skin and tighten it to provide a smoother appearance. Scarring from the procedure should be virtually invisible as the incisions are made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid.
- Lower eyelid surgery removes bags and fat deposits underneath the eyes. Incisions are made under the lower eyelashes, in many cases inside the eyelid itself. The excess fat, muscle and skin are removed, leaving a firmer, more youthful-looking aesthetic to the eyes.
The length of surgery will depend on which procedure you have selected to meet your goals; however, upper and lower eyelid surgery typically take from one to three hours to complete, and can be performed under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery
Your eyes will likely be lubricated with ointment after the procedure, and patients should expect some swelling for several days while the area heals. Some light sensitivity, temporary blurring, and tearing can also be expected during recovery. Most patients can resume normal activities after about 10 days.
While eyelid surgery does a good job of addressing problems such as drooping eyelids, bags beneath the eyes, and a perpetual sleepy and cross look, there are other cosmetic concerns, such as crow's feet, that are not necessarily corrected with traditional blepharoplasty. Eyelid surgery will not raise the eyebrows or lighten the skin under the eyes. Brow lift and skin resurfacing, respectively, address these problems. A mid-facelift may smooth crow’s feet, and frown lines may be relaxed with BOTOX® Cosmetic. For a consultation on eyelid surgery at our Short Hills, New Jersey-area practice, please take a moment to contact our plastic surgery team. We hope you’ll see why blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a favorite procedure for patients looking for a more youthful look.

Brow (Forehead) Lift
A brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, eliminates tell-tale signs of age and stress, and is one of the few procedures that allow a plastic surgeon to access the hard-to-reach muscles that cause furrow lines. Frown and furrow lines above our noses and across our foreheads make us appear more serious, angry, unhappy, and older than we truly are. They also have the effect of making us appear tired, especially as we age. During a browlift a plastic surgery patient's eyebrows can be raised and positioned higher on the brow bone. Excess skin and muscle are removed, resulting in a smoother aesthetic and more youthful, rested appearance. The incisions for a browlift can be hidden behind the hairline or along the creases of the skull bone for bald patients, giving you a rejuvenated appearance with virtually no indication that you've "had work done!"

Rhinoplasty
The nose is the center of your face. The shape of your nose, its size, and its relationship to your other facial features has a profound effect on your appearance. Alterations to the appearance of your nose can have an amazing effect on the aesthetics and overall balance of your facial features. If you are self-conscious because of your nasal shape or appearance, rhinoplasty surgery may help to boost your confidence and self-esteem.
Rhinoplasty is one of the most frequently performed facial plastic surgery procedures in the United States; and can yield many different changes to the appearance of the nose. Some of the benefits of rhinoplasty include:
- Increase or decrease in nose size
- Reduction of nostril width
- Change in angle between the nose and upper lip
- Change in shape of the bridge or nasal tip
Rhinoplasty surgery usually takes about two hours and is most often performed on an outpatient basis. While there will be some swelling and pain afterwards, it can be effectively managed with medications prescribed by your doctor. The swelling and discomfort should fade after a few days, and, within a week, you should be able to return to work or school.
When you have your plastic surgery consultation at our New Jersey office, one of our cosmetic surgeons will listen carefully to your goals and concerns, and then work with you to determine the ideal new shape for your nose.

Facial Implants
Facial implants can be placed in various parts of the face to achieve better harmony and balance among facial features. Implants are frequently used to strengthen a receding chin, add prominence to cheekbones, and reshape the jaw line. Incisions for chin and cheek implants are made in discreet locations, in many instances inside the mouth, so there will be no visible scarring. Facial implants can serve as excellent complements to other procedures, including rhinoplasty and facelift, to give the face a more balanced proportion and a rejuvenated aesthetic.

Injectables
One of the earliest signs of aging is the loss of facial fullness and the development of expression lines - wrinkles that appear as a result of the repeated movement of facial muscles. Injection therapy can plump thin lips, enhance shallow contours and soften facial creases and wrinkles, resulting in a smoother more youthful appearance. Injectable procedures such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, JUVÉDERM®, fat transfer, and Restylane® can provide almost instant facial rejuvenation and accentuate your natural beauty.

Skin Resurfacing (Chemical Peel)
Skin imperfections such as age spots, scars, and dead skin cells can make the skin look dull, lifeless, and dry. Skin resurfacing is specifically designed to help expose the skin's healthy, underlying layers, thus allowing cosmetic surgery patients to get the radiant, even complexions they've always desired.
Also known as a chemical peel, skin resurfacing usually takes less than 1 hour (sometimes just a few minutes) depending on the size of the area being treated. The skin resurfacing procedure uses various chemical agents applied by one of our skilled cosmetic surgeons to remove the upper layers of damaged skin at controlled levels of penetration. Chemical peels can minimize the appearance of fine lines around the mouth, eyes and cheeks, and are also effective in treating facial scars, uneven pigmentation, and areas of damaged or wrinkled skin caused by prolonged sun exposure. Many patients use chemical peels in conjunction with a facelift, to smooth fine wrinkles, or eyelid surgery, to lighten dark pouches.
Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) and Phenol Peels
Deeper, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and phenol peels are other options. These peels require only several days for the skin to recover, and are better suited for correcting more pronounced pigmentation problems and deeper wrinkles. Additional products for improving scars and pigmentation of various skin types are also available at our Skin Care Center.
