Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation using breast implants is a cosmetic enhancement procedure that adds shape and volume to the breasts, giving them a more youthful and attractive appearance. Many women around the world elect to undergo breast augmentation, making it one of the most commonly performed aesthetic surgical procedures today. Reasons women consider breast enlargement surgery include:
- Unhappiness with current breast size
- Droop or sagging of the breasts
- Loss of breast volume following pregnancy
- Massive weight loss
- Breast size is asymmetric
- Breast reconstruction after mastectomy
- Breast reconstruction due to malformation or disfigurement
Please contact our breast augmentation practice, serving Short Hills, New Jersey and the surrounding region, for more information on this effective procedure.
Breast Implants
The Peer Group Plastic Surgery Center in Florham Park, New Jersey, uses only FDA-approved breast implants to provide fuller, natural looking, beautifully shaped breasts. We offer breast augmentation patients a variety of sizes, types, and styles of implants. There are two main types of breast implants we use at our Short Hills, New Jersey-area facility:
Cohesive Silicone Gel Implants
Composed of a silicone outer shell, silicone breast implants are filled with a soft cohesive silicone gel. Silicone breast implants are known to look and feel more natural than their saline counterparts, and they are less likely to exhibit a rippling appearance. They are often advantageous for women who have very thin body frames or for those patients receiving breast implants as part of a breast reconstruction surgery.
Silicone implants are FDA-approved for patients who are 22 and older. Every aspect of the implants, including all risks and benefits, will be discussed with you at the time of your consultation.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline implants are filled with a salt-water solution, encased in an outer shell made of silicone. Available in many shapes and sizes, saline breast implants are most often filled after they have been inserted into the breast area. This technique makes it possible for the initial incision to be smaller and more discreet.
Breast Augmentation Procedure
Breast implants are placed either under your breast tissue or under your pectoral muscle which lies beneath the breast. The incision will be made as inconspicuously as possible, either in the breast fold or along the edge of the areola. Little scarring is visible after breast augmentation. With saline implants, the implant is inserted and then filled with the saltwater solution.
Breast augmentation surgery is performed at our New Jersey surgical facility under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. The procedure is typically completed in about one to two hours.
Breast Augmentation Recovery
Once the breast augmentation surgery is complete, you will be fitted with a support bra and light dressings. Most patients are recovered within a couple of days and full activities can typically be resumed within a few weeks.

Breast Lift
A breast lift can take years off your body’s appearance and restore your bustline to a more youthful appearance. Over the years, factors such as pregnancy, nursing, and the force of gravity take their toll on a woman's breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts lose their shape and firmness and begin to sag.
Breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts Mastopexy can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. If your breasts are small or have lost volume -- for example, after pregnancy – the insertion of breast implants in conjunction with mastopexy can increase both their firmness and size. Frequently, breast augmentation using breast implants is done simultaneously, and sometimes, for minimal to moderate sagging, breast augmentation alone may be enough to lift the breast.
Breast Lift Techniques
Several surgical methods may be used to perform a breast lift. The different techniques all involve nipple repositioning, skin excision and tightening of the area. Scarring is inevitable; however, the less sagging there is, the less tucking and tightening will be required, and therefore, the shorter the scars. Our cosmetic surgeons will make every effort to make any residual scarring as minimal and as discreet as possible.
At your initial consultation, our plastic surgeons will help you decide if breast lift, breast lift with breast implants, or breast augmentation with implants alone would be most effective in restoring your bustline.

Breast Reduction
Breast reduction surgery is designed to eliminate excess skin, fat, and tissue from the breasts. This procedure is often performed on women who have developed overly large breasts, and consequently suffer from a variety of medical problems caused by their excessive size and weight, including:
- Back pain
- Neck pain
- Skin irritation
- Skeletal deformities
- Breathing problems
- Bra strap indentations
- Self-consciousness
Breast reduction, technically known as reduction mammoplasty, makes the breasts smaller, lighter, and firmer. It can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. The goal is to give the woman smaller, better-shaped breasts which are in proportion with the rest of her body.

Breast Reconstruction
A mastectomy not only affects a woman physically, but it can affect her emotionally as well. We specialize in treating these patients with the utmost sensitivity and expertise when performing breast reconstruction, a procedure in which we rebuild the breast to make it appear as natural and beautiful as possible.
There are several methods to rebuild the breast. The method of reconstruction must be carefully tailored to meet the patient’s needs, and it may involve a breast implant, a tissue expander, or a skin or muscle flap.
Breast Implants with Subcutaneous Breast Reconstruction
A subcutaneous breast reconstruction involves a breast implant placed beneath the skin and muscle to replace the lost breast tissue. This procedure is possible for women who have had breast tissue removed but whose skin and nipples have been preserved. This is usually suitable for women with small breasts, who do not have breast cancer any longer.
Breast Implants with Submuscular Breast Reconstruction
Submuscular breast reconstruction is performed by placing an implant beneath the muscle covering the chest. This method is also only suitable for women with fairly small breasts because the skin is unlikely to stretch enough for a large implant.
Tissue Expansion
Tissue expansion uses a balloon-like implant that is placed beneath the muscle and skin. Over a period of weeks the balloon is made larger by injections of saline in the plastic surgeon’s office. After sufficient skin is expanded, the expander is replaced with a permanent breast implant.
Flap Reconstruction
This type of breast reconstruction uses flaps of muscle and skin, which are generally taken from the back or abdomen. These areas of the body contain very large muscles, providing enough skin and muscle for reconstruction of a breast on the chest wall. The large muscle used from the back is called the latissimus dorsi muscle and the muscle from the abdomen is the rectus abdominis muscle.
Breast reconstruction using muscle and skin flaps from the back or abdomen is major surgery requiring a hospital stay. Using a flap from the back generally poses less risk of complications but will often require the use of a breast implant.
If you have lost a breast through a mastectomy, our plastic surgeons can meet with you and talk about your options. Many women who undergo a mastectomy have had great success with breast reconstruction, attaining new breasts that both look and feel natural.
