Body Contouring - Liposuction, Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) in the Short Hills, New Jersey Area
Sometimes no matter how many abdominal exercises one does, eliminating excess fat or that "pouch" on the lower stomach and other areas of the body seems impossible. A recent birth or lost weight just intensifies the challenge. Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and liposuction from our New Jersey plastic surgeons in the Short Hills area are surgical procedures that serve as safe and effective methods to help patients get the taut, flat midsection that exercise has failed to achieve.

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
Abdominoplasty, known more commonly as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. Abdominoplasty can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen, but bear in mind, it does produce a permanent scar which, (depending on the extent of the original problem) can extend from hip to hip.
Tummy Tuck Procedure
A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) at our New Jersey practice, serving the Short Hills, Livingston, and Chatham areas, involves an incision made just above the pubic area. The skin is separated from the abdominal wall all the way up to the ribs. The muscles of the abdomen are then tightened, the lifted skin is then stretched down, and the extra skin and fat are removed. A new opening is made for the navel and the incision is then stitched closed. Depending on the patient’s body, the navel may not need to be repositioned. The entire procedure is typically completed in two to four hours.
Tummy Tuck Recovery
Most patients recover from a tummy tuck procedure within two weeks; however, they are advised to refrain from vigorous physical activity until the healing process is complete. Patients should allow about a month for the abdominal area to completely heal. If you have questions about abdominoplasty or “tummy tuck” and live in the Short Hills, New Jersey area, please contact one of our plastic surgeons.

Liposuction
Presently the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure, liposuction (also known as lipoplasty or suction lipectomy), sculpts the body by removing undesirable fat. Proven effective time and time again, liposuction can eliminate fat pockets from virtually any area of the body, including:
- Thighs
- Knees
- Buttocks
- Waist
- Love handles (flanks)
- Hips
- Abdomen
- Chin
- Cheeks
- Neck
- Upper arms
- Lower Legs
Liposuction can sculpt these areas and provide a more pleasing contour. For more information, please contact our liposuction surgeons serving New Jersey, including Short Hills, Livingston, Chatham, and the surrounding region.
Liposuction Techniques
The preferred technique we use in liposuction surgery is liposuction using a wetting solution, which is generally considered to be one of the safest and effective techniques. Liposuction uses moderate amounts of anesthetic in the treatment area to make fat cells easier for the surgeon to extract. Side effects such as bleeding, skin irritation, and swelling are typically reduced with liposuction using a wetting solution. Our surgeons will discuss this option with you in detail at your initial consultation at our liposuction facility serving the Short Hills, New Jersey area.
Liposuction Procedure
How the liposuction procedure is carried out will largely depend on the technique that will performed; however, traditional liposuction is performed by inserting long metal tubes called cannulas into small incisions made in the treatment area. The cannulas are gently moved back and forth, vacuuming out fat cells and ultimately providing a new contour to the area. The length of time a liposuction patient will be in surgery depends on the number and size of areas that he or she is having treated. Most liposuction procedures last about two hours or less.
Liposuction Recovery
Most liposuction patients are able to return to work within a few days. Some swelling and bruising is to be expected; however this should dissipate significantly as healing progresses.
If your attempts at losing weight in problem areas have been fruitless, and if you’re investigating liposuction further, let us answer your questions about effective aesthetic enhancement treatments that can provide a solution. Combined with diet and exercise, liposuction provides long lasting improvement of contours of the face and body. We offer liposuction to Short Hills, Chatham, and Livingston patients from our office in Florham Park, New Jersey.

Gynecomastia Treatment (Male Breast Reduction)
Male breast reduction surgery at The Peer Group Plastic Surgery Center is designed to help men who feel embarrassed about the appearance of their chest achieve a more ideal body contour. Gynecomastia is a common condition in which a man's chest develops excess tissue, largely made up of fat and some glandular tissue, that creates an appearance similar to protruding breasts. It is estimated that anywhere from 40 to 60 percent of all men will develop gynecomastia at some point in their lives. Although some drugs and medical problems are believed to increase the risk that a man will experience gynecomastia, the actual causes of the condition are unknown. A man who suffers from gynecomastia may feel self-conscious about the appearance of his chest, and may avoid situations in which his gynecomastia would be noticeable, such as visits to the beach. Many gynecomastia cases can be successfully treated using liposuction. Men whose gynecomastia is comprised mainly of fatty tissues can have that fat removed over the course of a short liposuction procedure at our facility in Florham Park. The skin on your chest naturally conforms to the new shape of your torso, leaving you with a much flatter, more contoured chest. If you have large amounts of gland tissue in your chest, our plastic surgeon will surgically remove it, and may also perform a liposuction procedure to remove any excess fat that may contribute to your gynecomastia. In particularly severe cases, some skin may be removed in order to achieve the optimal chest shape. In any case, scars will be kept to a minimum, and will be strategically placed so they remain inconspicuous.

Arm Reduction (Brachioplasty)
Significant weight loss and natural aging often cause excess fat and skin folds to accumulate in the upper arm area. With an arm reduction, medically referred to as brachioplasty, loose skin on the arms can be eliminated and the area tightened, to form a more contoured appearance. The procedure involves an incision made from the armpit to the elbow. Excess fat is removed from the area and the upper arm is recontoured. Any residual scarring is very discreet and our surgeon will work diligently to make it as light and unnoticeable as possible. Recovery from an arm lift typically lasts a few days following the procedure. Any discomfort can be alleviated with medication.
Thigh Lift
Thigh lift is another body contouring procedure designed to firm up the thighs and hips and reduce the appearance of excess fat and loose skin. Excess tissue and fat will be removed through small incisions made in the thighs or from the groin area to the crease of the buttocks. The area will then be tightened and recontoured for a more fit appearance. The extent of the procedure and the type of thigh lift procedure you undergo (inner, bilateral, or medial) will determine your recovery time; however, recovery typically does not last more than a few days. Pain and discomfort can be managed with medication. Although thigh lift procedures do leave some residual scarring, it is typically light and discreet and easily concealed under clothing.
Body Lift
Individuals who have undergone significant weight loss, or those who simply cannot lose weight regardless of how much they diet and exercise, can achieve their aesthetic goals with body lift procedures offered by our cosmetic surgeons at The Peer Group. A body lift is designed to eliminate excess fat, folds, and loose hanging skin to provide you with a more contoured appearance. There are four types of body lift:
Upper Body Lift
This type of body lift typically addresses areas such as the arms and breasts. Excess skin and fat are removed through discreet incisions. After the excess is eliminated, the areas of skin are pulled taut to create a more firm appearance to the arms and breasts, with less sagginess or droopiness.
Lower Body Lift
This procedure addresses areas such as the hips, buttocks, and thighs. An incision is made along the waist and down to the inner thighs. Excess tissue and fat are removed and the skin of the area is tightened to create a more fit look to the lower body region.
Mid-Body Lift
Mid-body lift addresses the abdomen in addition to the thighs, buttocks, and hips, creating a firm contour from the stomach area down to the thighs. A waistline incision is made, continuing across the abdomen and down to the thighs. The abdominal muscles area pulled taut and excess fat and skin in the lower region are removed. The skin of these areas are then tightened, creating a flatter stomach and a firm lower body.
Total (Circumferential) Body Lift
This body contouring procedure addresses virtually every part of the body affected by loose, excess skin and fat. These include the breasts, arms, abdomen, thighs, hips, and buttocks. Total body lift involves an incision spanning the entire circumference of the body around the waistline. Excess tissue and fat are removed in all the areas being addressed and the skin is tightened to form a more contoured look for the entire body. Total body lift procedures are useful for patients who have experienced massive weight loss and are affected by loose, overhanging skin in a range of body areas.
Body Lift Recovery
Patients should expect significant amounts of recovery time after body lift procedures, particularly total body lifts. Total body lift patients may need six weeks or more to fully recover, and patients should strictly follow all of our doctor's post-operative instructions. There will be some visible scarring after body lift procedures; however, they should fade with time and our cosmetic surgeons will work diligently to ensure that any scars resulting from incisions are very discreet and can be easily hidden under clothing.
Body Implants
Patients at our New Jersey practice who would like better contour and a more firm appearance to their bodies may benefit from a variety of body implant procedures. Implants designed to enhance the form of the buttocks, calves, and other regions can make these areas look more toned and muscular, adding shape, definition, and better balance among body features. Our implants are typically made of silicone elastomer material that has proven effective in a range of body implant procedures.
