Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, refers to plastic surgery procedures that have been proven effective for restoring a more youthful appearance by removing fatty deposits and sagging skin around the eyes that can make us look old and tired. Attesting to the results, blepharoplasty is among the most common aesthetic plastic surgery procedures performed today on men and women. Sure, it’s effective, you may ask, but is it safe?

First and foremost, it’s imperative that you work with a properly trained, board certified and experienced plastic surgeon when seeking treatment for drooping eyelids, or for any plastic surgery procedure. When being treated by these professionals, eyelid surgery is very safe, but it’s still natural to be anxious about the procedure, and wonder what it entails.

Upper eyelid surgery trims away excess skin that gives you a tired “droopy eyelid” appearance and/or affects vision. The plastic surgeon lifts the remaining skin and tightens it to provide a smoother appearance. Scarring from the eyelid treatment should be virtually invisible as the incisions are made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Lower eyelid plastic surgery removes bags and fat deposits underneath the eyes. Incisions are made under the lower eyelashes, and sometimes inside the eyelid itself. The excess fat, muscle and skin are removed, achieving a firmer, more youthful-looking aesthetic to the eyes.

For the overwhelming majority of patients local anesthesia with sedation is all that is necessary. In some situations it can be beneficial to have the patient more awake, so that they can move their eyelids on command, helping the surgeon achieve better results than would be possible under general anesthesia.            At the Peer Group we perform upper and lower eyelid surgery at our fully accredited surgical center.

It’s normal to have many questions if you’re considering eyelid plastic surgery, but when performed by a qualified Plastic Surgeon, safety needn’t be at the top of the list.
