Scar Revision Giving Your Skin a Fresh Start
by Francisco G. Colón, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Do you have a scar whose appearance makes you self-conscious? Scar revision plastic surgery can reduce the size and severity of scars caused by injury or previous surgery. Though many such scars fade over time, disruptions to the healing process can cause scars to become red, raised, indented or otherwise deformed. If you have scars you’re unhappy about, here’s what you need to know about your cosmetic plastic surgery treatment options.
Some scars are of only cosmetic concern, but others may impact your range of motion or have other physiological affects. Thus, the type of scar, as well as its appearance is often a factor in selecting an appropriate treatment. Hypertrophic scars, for example, are red, raised scars filled with excessive amounts of collagen. They may be itchy or slightly painful, but are considered harmless and do not grow beyond the boundaries of the initial wound. Keloids are overgrown areas of scar tissue that appear as irregularly-shaped, raised, pink or red areas that may continue to grow over time. They are most common on the face, neck, ears, chest or shoulders. If the scar is expanding, you may elect to have it removed. Contractures are more severe scars that restrict movement as a result of the tissue in the area pulling together during the healing process. This type of scar, which most commonly occurs after large amounts of tissue loss or in wounds that occur over a joint, is a good candidate for scar revision.
Plastic surgery procedures for scar revision include surgical excision, skin grafts, flap surgery and Z-plasty. The best procedure for each patient depends on the location and severity of the scar, as well as the age, overall health and extent of revision desired by the patient.
