Juvederm and Restylane to Reduce Wrinkles

Monday, February 21st, 2011

Everybody’s heard about BOTOX, and how BOTOX injections can reduce wrinkles and lines on the face. But now other injectable fillers have joined BOTOX in the anti-aging arsenal, and anyone concerned about personal appearance should know about these non-invasive plastic surgery options. Two of the most popular and effective fillers are Juvederm and Restylane. Here at The Peer Group in northern New Jersey, our certified plastic surgeons have experience working with a variety of FDA-approved cosmeceuticals, including these two.

Reduce wrinkles

Juvederm is an injectable gel that can erase permanent facial lines like furrows and deep wrinkles that develop as a result of aging. Juvederm is especially effective at reducing nasolabial folds , the lines that run from the bottom of the nose to the corner of the mouth. The procedure takes about 15 minutes and no anesthesia is needed, though your doctor may use a topical or injectable anesthetic to minimize any potential discomfort. Juvederm is made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin that adds volume and hydration. Juvederm isn’t the only filler made from hyaluronic acid, but because Juvederm is a gel, while most others have a granular consistency, it is easily injected into the skin. The results are immediate and appear totally natural. Juvederm is also the first hyaluronic acid filler the FDA has approved for use on persons of color.

Restylane is another a hyaluronic acid-based filler. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane filler is not derived from animal or human sources, so it has the added benefit of having no risk of provoking an allergic reaction. That means no pretesting is required before Restylane injections, making it a very simple procedure. A clear, transparent gel, Restylane is particularly good for reducing glabellar lines – the furrows between the eyebrows – as well as the nasolabial folds. Restylane is also often used for enhancing the lips and facial contouring.

One consideration when being treated with Botox, Juvederm or Restylane, or any injectable filler: because these procedures seem relatively simple to administer, physicians who do not have a background in plastic surgery also offer these treatments. We recommend using board certified plastic surgeons for best results.
