Sun spots – also called liver spots or age spots – are a natural sign of aging skin – but that doesn’t mean we have to like them or live with them. One of the scourges of skin care, sun spots result from exposure to the sun, and are usually found on areas that are most exposed to sunlight: forearms, neck, chest, the back of the hands. Patients at The Peer Group often ask our board certified plastic surgeons and physicians what they can do about sun spots. The good news is, a variety of minimally invasive cosmetic procedures are available that can virtually eliminate sunspots.
Laser skin resurfacing is one option for removing sunspots, and several laser therapies allow treatments to be tailored for each patient. The Cutera Pearl laser can help even out pigment irregularities of the face. IPL devices are used for laser photo rejuvenation, a powerful and effective treatment for freckles, acne scars and other types of pigmentation including sun spots. Photo facial technology, another form of cosmetic laser, exposes the skin to an intense pulsed light the helps even out the skin’s texture, shrink pores, and reduce capillaries and spider veins.
Microdermabrasion is another effective minimally invasive plastic surgery procedure that can remove sun spots by buffing away the skin’s top layer and stimulating collagen production. A chemical peel, another option for treating sun spots, removes the top layer of skin and removes scars, spots and blemishes, and is an effective approach to removing sun spots. Prescription strength skin care products available at the Peer Group Skin Center can also achieve dramatic improvement of sun spots as part of a medically managed skin care program.
At The Peer Group, we perform all these procedures, tailored to the individual needs of our patients from Basking Ridge, Far Hills, Mountain Lakes and throughout northern New Jersey. Given the number of choices in treatments, before embarking on any cosmetic therapy, make sure you consult with a qualified, licensed cosmetic medicine specialist.

We’d like to address one more skin care blog on the subject of cosmetic laser therapies before moving on. We’ll probably come back to this subject. As we’ve been blogging about, lasers have had a huge impact in the field of cosmetic medical procedures, and the advances in the technology and its applications in the cosmetic medicine field is truly astonishing. They’re so effective, the procedures are sometimes called laser facelifts. Here at The Peer Group in northern New Jersey, our board certified plastic surgeons offer an entire Peer Laser Center that’s devoted to the use of lasers for hair removal, vein therapy and laser skin resurfacing treatments. So don’t be surprised if we come back to this subject as we reflect on the latest and greatest in professional skin care procedures.
One of the recent advances in laser skin care therapies is the Laser Genesis system. It uses non-invasive laser light to safely treat fine wrinkles, large pores, uneven skin texture, redness, and scars, restoring a smooth skin texture. This non-invasive cosmetic procedure produces a warming sensation of the skin, but topical anesthetics are not needed. Mild redness may occur following Laser Genesis skin care treatments, but subsides within a few hours. Commonly treated areas are the nose, cheeks and neck. Laser Genesis diminishes pore size and lessens or eliminates sun damage. Rosacea also responds well to Laser Genesis. With each treatment the redness is lessened. Four to six laser treatments are needed to achieve optimal results and provide the full benefits of this skin care therapy.

In our last blog we mentioned the importance of consulting with a skin care professional who can explain your skin care options and give you advice based on your skin type, skin condition and other factors. If the consultant is affiliated with a cosmetic medicine practice, make sure the facility offers a complete range of professional skin care procedures, so you can have absolute confidence you’re not being steered into one procedure because the facility doesn’t offer a more appropriate treatment, due to lack of necessary equipment or expertise. For the record, here at The Peer Group in northern New Jersey, consultations with our trained skin care specialists includes a Visia Complexion Analysis, a complete evaluation of your skin, and our board certified plastic surgeons are experienced with every form of cosmetic therapy and procedure.
If your skin care consultation concludes the delicate areas around the eyes and mouth are showing signs of aging – among the first facial areas where symptoms of aging skin appear – your consultant may recommend the Pearl Fractional Laser treatments. The Pearl Fractional is uniquely effective in treating these delicate areas. The Pearl fractional is a new, fractional, single treatment laser designed to improve imperfections caused by aging and sun damage. Treatment with the Pearl Fractional improves fine lines and wrinkles. It offers the best combination of maximum results, rapid recovery, patient safety and operating history. After their skin care treatments with Pearl, patients report noticing a smoother, brighter complexion overall.
It’s called fractional therapy because the non-invasive cosmetic treatment affects only a small percentage, or fraction, of the skin. With Pearl Fractional, the laser pulses treat damaged cells deep in the skin. This shortens healing time while stimulating the body’s own process for creating collagen. The skin is rejuvenated from below, reversing photo aging and other imperfections. The treatment can be used on the entire face in addition to areas around the eyes and mouth. In some cases, your Plastic Surgeon may recommend combining the Pearl for removing the surface damage and the Pearl Fractional for improving the fine lines and wrinkles. If you’re ready for an anti-aging breakthrough like this and live in Livingston, Patterson, Millburn, Florham Park or anywhere in northern New Jersey, contact The Peer Group and schedule a consultation with one of our skin care professionals.

Non-invasive cosmetic laser treatments like the procedures our board certified plastic surgeons perform at The Peer Group in northern New Jersey prove there’s nothing wrong with beauty being only skin deep. Laser therapies like the Pearl Procedure for Skin Restoration can give patients more youthful, healthier skin, with little downtime while barely penetrating the skin. Of course not everyone responds to Pearl – or any other cosmetic laser treatment – the same way. That’s why it’s important to get qualified guidance from a skin care professional before you embark on any cosmetic procedure – in addition to making sure whoever performs it is a licensed specialist. Here at The Peer Group, we provide guidance during an initial consultation with a skin care consultant.
Patients with light to medium skin tones who have mild to moderate sun damage are excellent candidates for Pearl resurfacing skin care. Utilizing the Cutera laser system, Pearl resurfacing provides a safe and effective treatment for restoring the skin’s natural beauty. It reduces wrinkles, uneven texture and sun damage with fewer treatments and less recovery time than alternative professional skin care treatments. The Pearl procedure produces a healthy glow to the complexion with the combination of two effects: The skin’s surface is treated with laser light for resurfacing, while heat is delivered to the deeper layers to firm and tighten the skin. A natural dressing is formed on the skin, which washes off in a few days to reveal smoother healthier skin beneath. The normal down time for this laser skin rejuvenation procedure is three to four days. Usually one or two treatments, spaced one month apart, are needed to achieve optimal results. If you live in Morristown or Essex Counties or anywhere in the northern New Jersey, contact The Peer Group to schedule an appointment with one of our skin care professionals, and find out more about your skin deep beauty.
