Rhinoplasty or nose reshaping – a “nose job” in common parlance – is one of the most popular facial cosmetic plastic surgery procedures performed, and it’s easy to understand why. The nose is one of the most prominent features on our faces, and its size, shape and relationship to other features has a major impact on our overall appearance. So rhinoplasty surgery doesn’t simply change the way your nose looks – it can change the way your whole face looks.
Let’s face it – few of us are born with a perfect nose. Many people wish their nose was smaller, or that the bridge was straight instead of hooked or beaked, for example. But rhinoplasty can change other important aspects of the appearance of your nose, besides simply making it smaller, or straighter. The plastic surgery procedure can change the size of your nostrils, the angle between the nose and the upper lip, the shape of the nasal bridge, and reshape the tip of your nose.
Rhinoplasty surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, and may be performed under either general or local anesthesia. During the procedure, your plastic surgeon removes and reshapes cartilage and bone in your nose. The operation usually takes about two hours. Afterwards, the nasal area will exhibit swelling, but antibiotics and pain medication help ensure recovery from rhinoplasty is uncomplicated. Most patients are ready to resume normal activities in about one week.
As with any plastic surgery procedure, rhinoplasty is an art as well as a medical science, so it’s important to work with a cosmetic surgeon who has experience with the procedure and also understands to the results you want. And remember, there is more to your nose than appearance. The nose is important for proper respiration, and rhinoplasty can affect your nasal passages and your breathing. In fact, many people undergo rhinoplasty to correct breathing problems. Plastic surgeons consider both the aesthetics and the functionality of your nose when planning and conducting a rhinoplasty procedure. The team of board certified plastic surgeons at The Peer Medical Group in northern New Jersey are experts in rhinoplasty, and are always happy to meet with prospective patients on this or any other aesthetic plastic surgery procedure.

Liposuction is among the most popular cosmetic procedures today, and our clients in northern New Jersey make lots of inquiries about it. Many of them are confused by all the different kinds of liposuction surgery available, so here’s a summary of some of the best known liposuction techniques.
Tumescent liposuction, a standard form of suction-assisted liposuction, uses high volumes of fluid containing an anesthetic infused directly into the fatty tissue being removed. This procedure can be performed in an office setting under local anesthesia usually with sedation, rather than general anesthesia, which has helped make it a popular procedure.
Super-wet liposuction is similar to tumescent liposuction, and uses about the same volume of infused liquid as the volume of fat expected to be removed. It is most often used for procedures where a high-volume of fat is being suctioned from the body.
Ultrasound liposuction, another form of suction-assisted liposuction, uses a specialized cannula that transmits ultrasonic vibrations that burst the walls of fat cells, liquefying the fat – a process called lipolysis – and making it easier to suction out.
Laser liposuction uses thermal and photomechanical energy for lipolysis – that is, to help liquefy the fat.
Power assisted liposuction uses a cannula with a mechanized movement, relieving the surgeon of the need to manually maneuver the cannula.
These various liposuction techniques can be used to remove fat from many different parts of the body – liposuction for thighs, the abdomen, buttocks, neck, backs of the arms and even liposuction on the chin. Women most often have lipo – as the procedure is often called – on the abdomen and thighs, while men have lipo on the abdomen and flanks – their love handles. Sometimes removed fat is used as filler in other areas of the body, to reduce wrinkles or fill out areas like the cheeks that have been depleted of natural fat stores over time.
As with any cosmetic procedure, you need to understand what liposuction can and cannot do, and have realistic expectations about results. Your physician can discuss all liposuction procedures available to you. Ask to see before and after liposuction photos of patients. Liposuction is a fascinating subject, so you can expect to see more about it in our blog.
