Laser Therapy for Permanent Hair Removal

Unwanted body and facial hair has long been a vexing cosmetic problem. Removing it meant enduring long, uncomfortable skin care treatments – plucking individual hairs, pulling them out with tape, using caustic depilatory creams or undergoing periodic electrolysis. Fortunately, lasers have largely zapped those skin care methods. Today laser depilation, or hair removal procedures, can permanently reduce or eliminate hair on virtually any part of the body, quickly.
Here at The Peer Group, serving communities in Essex, Somerset and Hunterdon Counties and throughout northern New Jersey, our plastic surgeons employ two different light-based devices- the Cutera CoolGlide laser and the ProWave intense pulsed light device – for hair removal, enabling us to really customize hair removal procedures for each patient. The Cutera CoolGlide laser is especially effective on facial hair of the lip, chin and sideburns, and body hair around the underarms, bikini areas and nipples, and it is effective on patients with all skin types and tanned skin. A chilled hand piece reduces the accompanying stinging sensation, so no anesthesia is required. Nonetheless, a topical numbing cream can be applied.
The ProWave targets larger areas of the body, such as the back or legs. The ProWave, like the CoolGlide, has a chilled hand piece, eliminating the need for anesthesia, though a topical anesthetic can be used.
Most areas targeted for laser hair removal require three to six treatments to permanently reduce the number of hair follicles actively growing hair. As dormant follicles grow new hair, they are removed with successive laser treatments. Typically, treatments are spaced four to six weeks apart.
