With its ability to give your eyes a more youthful appearance, eyelid surgery, is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed today, eliminating bags under the eyes as well as droopy eyelids. We recently blogged about the recovery process for eyelid plastic surgery. That’s an important subject because the recovery period for this or any other plastic surgery procedure plays a big role in your comfort as well as the final outcome of the treatment. Learning about the recovery process beforehand enables you to plan ahead and be prepared for any necessary adjustments to your schedule and daily activities.
If you’re considering eyelid surgery – also called blepharoplasty or an eye lift – here are a few basic things to keep in mind to make the first few days after eyelid surgery to ensure the recovery goes as smoothly as possible: Make sure to keep the skin protected and at the proper moisture level as it heals. For the first couple of days after the plastic surgery procedure, an ointment treatment can keep incisions moist. Simple ice pads can reduce post-operative swelling and bruising, and prescription medications capable of reducing swollen, bruised skin are also available. When sleeping, keep your head elevated higher than the body. The improved drainage of fluid from the area will speed recovery. Whether the procedure was performed on your upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both, simple ocular exercises like closing and opening your eyes and looking up toward the ceiling while keeping your head stationary help keep your eyes lubricated after the eyelid treatment. If you’re going outside, wear dark glasses to prevent irritation from the wind and sun.
Follow your cosmetic plastic surgeon’s instructions for post-operative care and you’ll be well on the way to smooth recovery. Most patients can return to work within a week to ten days of the surgery. Some signs of the eyelid plastic surgery may still be visible, but they can be covered by makeup. Our staff of board certified plastic surgeons at The Peer Group in northern New Jersey performs many blepharoplasty procedures, and we invite you to schedule an appointment at our plastic surgery center in Florham Park to learn more.

Eyes are the windows to the soul – no wonder people want a youthful, attractive frame for them. Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is a simple, effective way to restore a youthful look to your eyes. Cosmetic eyelid surgery is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures performed today. Our board certified plastic surgeons here at The Peer Group perform eyelid surgeries for women and men throughout northern New Jersey and beyond who want to look and feel their best.
In an earlier blog we talked about how deposits of fat and tissues that build up around the eyes as a natural part of aging can impart a, sleepy, angry, or even unhealthy appearance. Just about everyone considering this cosmetic procedure want to know how eyelid surgery is performed. Here’s the answer: The pockets of fat can build up in two primary areas: beneath the eyebrow and beneath the lower eyelid. Depending on where these pockets have built up around your eyes, your plastic surgeon may recommend either upper eyelid surgery, to remove the fat from beneath the brows, lower eyelid surgery, or a combination of both. Fat deposits under the eyebrow give you a tired, “droopy eyelid” appearance, and can even affect vision. Upper eyelid surgery involves trimming away excess fat and skin, and then lifting and tightening the remaining skin. Scarring from this eyelid treatment is virtually invisible because incisions are made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. If lower eyelid plastic surgery is performed, incisions are made under the lower eyelashes, and often inside the eyelid itself. The eyelid skin is lifted after excess fat, muscle and skin are removed.
Done in combination, upper and lower eyelid surgery typically takes from one to three hours to complete, and can be performed under local anesthesia. If you want to learn more, we invite you to contact us for a consultation.

If anything can have a greater impact on giving you a youthful or contoured look than a plastic surgery procedure, it would be combining two or more complementary cosmetic surgery procedures. For example, patients who elect to have eyelid surgery because they want to eliminate the bags under their eyes frequently opt to have a facelift at the same time, for more dramatic results. A breast lift if often combined with breast augmentation, while liposuction may be performed on different areas of the body concurrently – with a limit to the absolute volume of fat removed for safety.
Our board certified plastic surgeons at The Peer Group in northern New Jersey often perform cosmetic surgery procedures in combination. But some patients are under the impression that certain cosmetic plastic surgery procedures cannot be safely combined – For example, that performing liposuction and tummy tuck together can lead to complications. But this is a historical inaccuracy. For many years it has been shown that Liposuction of the abdomen can be safely combined with abdominoplasty, provided that limited, central undermining of the abdominal flap is done. If you’re considering a facelift, tummy tuck, rhinoplasty (what’s commonly called a “nose job”) or other common plastic surgery, you should work with a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon at a reputable facility. As we tell Peer Group patients from Short Hills, Morristown, Livingston, and throughout the northern New Jersey region that, in the final analysis, is the best plastic surgery combination possible.

>Eye contact is one of the most important ways we interact with one another. So you have to ask yourself, “What do people see when they look into my eyes?” For many of us exhibiting the natural signs of aging, the answer is eyes that can make us look sleepy, angry, or even unhealthy, all because small pockets of fat have built up under the brow or lower eyelid. Here at The Peer Group, our board certified plastic surgeons have helped many people from throughout northern New Jersey whose drooping eyelids have given them a premature aged appearance through cosmetic eyelid surgery procedures. The fact that this is the second most common aesthetic plastic surgery procedure performed on both women and men indicates the dramatic difference a little plastic surgery on the eyelids can make in the way you look and feel.
Called blepharoplasty, or an eye lift, eyelid surgery removes the pockets of fat and loose skin and muscle from areas around the eyes. But the areas targeted for this procedure depend on your particular needs, and it may be performed on the upper eyelid, the lower eyelid, or both. Here are the basics you should know about each form of this plastic surgery procedure:
Upper eyelid surgery trims excess skin that imparts a tired appearance, and can even affect your vision. With this excess trimmed your plastic surgeon then lifts and tightens the remaining skin to give it a smoother appearance. Scarring is virtually invisible because the incisions are mad in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Lower eyelid treatment targets bags and fat deposits underneath the eyes. Excess fat, muscle and skin are removed.
Eyelid plastic surgery is often performed in conjunction with another cosmetic surgery such as a brow lift or facelift, to remove crows’ feet and facial sagging. Eyelid surgeries are relatively simple, and can be performed under local anesthesia, and usually takes only one to three hours to complete, depending on extent of the work being performed. We recommend working with a cosmetic plastic surgeon who has significant experience performing eyelid surgeries. Ask to see pictures taken before and after eyelid surgery so you can review the results of their work. That will help ensure when people look into your eyes, they’ll see a youthful, happy gaze.
