Breast augmentation is the #1 type of cosmetic surgical procedure right now, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, with 286,274 breast augmentations performed in 2012. That’s a 35% increase since the year 2000. We’re not talking about women having breast lifts, but rather changes to the shape and contours of their breasts, to give them a more youthful appearance and perhaps fix a problem with lack of symmetry. When one breast is larger than the other, you might be concerned because one breast is spilling out of a bra cup, while the other breast looks just fine. A lack of symmetry in your breast shape and size can cause many wardrobe issues, especially in bathing suits and other revealing elements of your fashion arsenal, so breast augmentation may finally eliminate this troublesome situation, and give you a renewed sense of self-confidence thanks to your plastic surgeon’s skills. Breast augmentation, or a breast implant procedure, is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery operations. Obviously, many women feel their natural breast size could be improved upon. But what’s an appropriate age to have this procedure? It’s often broadly stated that breast augmentation surgery may be appropriate for women between the ages of 18 and 50, but some caveats need to be added to that advice, particularly at the lower age range. First, a woman’s breasts should be fully developed before breast augmentation surgery is performed, and this development may not be complete until a woman is in her early 20s. Implants may cause stretch marks and sagging in breasts that are not yet fully developed. As part of his or her evaluation, a cosmetic plastic surgeon must determine whether a young woman’s breasts are completely developed. Additionally, the Food and Drug Administration only permits the use of saline breast implants and does not allow the use of silicone implants on women under the age of 22. (more…)

Breast Augmentation

Women unhappy with the size or shape of their breasts have a wealth of options. Some women with large breasts may want to reduce their size through breast reduction, but most women are more interested in enhancing the size or shape of their breasts. Breast augmentation and breast lifts are two popular breast enlargement procedures. But what’s the difference between these procedures, and how do you decide which is right for you?

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a procedure that gives a new contour to the breast, but does not actually increase the size of the breasts. Breast lift procedures can rejuvenate drooping breasts that have lost firmness and have begun to sag due to age, weight or as a result of pregnancy. The breast lift plastic surgeon can also reposition the nipples during this procedure, and if desired, reduce the size of the areole, the dark circular area surrounding the nipple. As the contouring requires the removal of excess skin there are more surgical scars following a breast lift than following a breast augmentation procedure. (more…)
